Hello,
I no longer know what to do to connect to the internet,
Win 2000 Pro sp4 PIII 550 E 256 Mo ntfs
Fortunately, I have a second PC PII 300 192 Mo also with Win 2000 Pro sp4 ntfs, with which I can currently contact you.
I am on the same telephone line as the malfunctioning PC and the dial-up connection is working fine.
I had ADSL access through Cegetel (3 weeks of working without issues, perfect installation), but now, I've lost the ability to connect. I called the hotline, but after 30 minutes, nothing progressed.
So I thought, let's try dial-up, and there, surprise, no connection either.
"Error 6 invalid descriptor"
I have retyped the username and password for my dial-up accesses (Free, Cegetel) many times, same error.
I want to avoid formatting because the rest is working fine, but I did launch a repair of Win2000, reinstalling Service Pack 4 and IE 6.0 from the Cegetel CD.
Still the same, error 6
So, is formatting mandatory to get out of this mess??
Thanks for your replies.

Hello,
here are my recommendations:
- Perform all available updates via Windows Update.
- Update the antivirus if there is one.
- Update the modem driver.
- Check in the network properties that there are no other elements present other than TCP/IP, File and Printer Sharing & Client for Microsoft Networks. If there is another element, it should be disabled.
I faced this symptom and it was resolved through the actions mentioned above.
Best regards, Joe
