Question

Hello,
I noticed that Google Update starts up as soon as I turn on my computer. However, when I disable it with CCleaner, it re-enables itself. Is Google Update really important? How can I disable it?

The version of Google Update has changed, and none of the three solutions to uninstall it work for me.

My solution on XP, disable Google Update services:
- open Control Panel.
- Administrative Tools
- Services
Then, by sorting the services alphabetically (or not, but it's more annoying to find)

Find the 2 "Google Update services," right-click on them, properties, startup type, choose stopped.
This way, you can restart it if you feel the need.

Good evening,
Google Update is responsible for updating all Google software that is installed on your computer.

At the end of this article, it is stated that if you want to uninstall Google Update, you must uninstall all Google applications, and Google Update will disappear by itself after a few hours.

I haven't checked, but IF what you're saying is true, the 'after a few hours' is unacceptable.

An uninstallation must be done immediately whenever we wish and without delay (with a reboot if necessary). The user should never suffer; they must control their environment, so the app should be removed promptly at their request... that's a standard... so I'm surprised (I don't have time to verify).

It's weird, no matter how much we set "disabled" in the service's startup type, it still starts up automatically. Impossible to stop it, the box is greyed out.

Google lies! The uninstallation proposed by BliBlaBloum is only partial.
To really uninstall it, you need to fiddle with the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Google Update.
You also need to remove the add-on of the same name in Firefox....
If someone can explain to me why Google automatically installs an add-on in my browser, I'll buy them strawberries.

Oh, I thought it was my antivirus slowing down my PC, and tonight I just saw that indeed Google had scheduled updates every hour. Pffff. In Task Scheduler, I simply right-clicked on Update, then Properties, and unchecked ACTIVE at the bottom. I hope it works and that I could help some people.

To disable programs that start automatically without your consent, you need to perform a small manipulation. First of all, you should know that every time you install a program, in 80% of cases, it starts at the same time as your OS (Windows). Sometimes, without paying attention, when we install a program, we forget to uncheck the box "start the program at Windows startup." In that case, in the future, make sure to uncheck this famous box when you install any program.
Moreover, as you probably already know, the more programs that start with Windows, the longer the startup or shutdown process will take. It can even happen that the startup or shutdown of Windows takes a considerable amount of time when there are many programs. It consumes a lot of resources (CPU) and can sometimes be a real headache.
In short, to choose the program(s) you want to start (or not) with Windows (at Windows startup), do this:

ON WINDOWS XP:
Start>Run>type "msconfig" (without quotes)>Validate or OK>tab "startup">"uncheck the unwanted programs for Windows startup>"Apply" and/or "OK">a window opens, choose: "restart now"> CAUTION when your PC or computer restarts, a window opens again, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO REMEMBER TO CHECK THE BOX OFFERED OTHERWISE THE CHANGES WILL NOT BE EFFECTED. ON WINDOWS VISTA AND SEVEN (WINDOWS 7):

In Vista and Seven, the "Run" command does not appear in the Start menu.
So, you have to look for it, and once found, you can make the changes.

1st solution:
Type "Run" in "Search" to find and access the "Run" Command.

2nd solution:
Use the shortcut key "WIN" + "R" key (press Win+R simultaneously).

Note that these 2 manipulations (solutions 1 and 2) do not make this command permanently visible, and you will need to repeat them each time you need it. But...
...If you want to make this command permanently visible in your "Start" menu, here is the procedure to follow:

- Right-click on the Taskbar, then select "Properties" >On the Start Menu tab, click on "Customize" and check "Run command", and finally click "OK" and/or "Apply".

I also found myself with Google Update after quickly installing another software; I canceled the installation of Google Chrome before it finished, but the thing still managed to make itself at home. It's puzzling why it's in the list of services if we can't control it.

The solution is very simple: kill the process (or use Unlocker) and delete the program files/google folder. It doesn't cause any issues upon reboot.

Hello, I had a folder in Appdata/roaming/ called google, with a nice file "Google updater" inside, but despite showing hidden folders, I couldn't find it. So I went through the command prompt to delete this invisible folder and all its contents.

I have the PC in sleep mode and hibernate, which used to wake up every day at 6 am. As a result, if the PC is unplugged from the mains, it runs out of battery. In the event viewer, I found that it was "gupdate," the Google update.
There is no way to uninstall the program except to delete it manually in program files.
I found the service in "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools ==> SERVICES"
I have disabled it or set it to manual.
I also found the plugin in the Mozilla add-ons manager ==> disabled (thanks aymantn).

After formatting and reinstalling XP, I'm reinstalling a few browsers including Google Chrome, and there I see Rogue Killer detecting 5 rogues related to Google Update for the most part.
