an .exe format is a larger executable file. a .zip file is compressed and therefore takes up less space

If you choose the exe format, you'll download an executable that will allow you to install the software; otherwise, in zip format, you'll download an archive that needs to be extracted and contains what is necessary to install or run the software without needing to install it (for some programs).
