hi friends
I'm receiving a message at startup of the computer that stops Windows from opening: "CPU fan error - Press F1 to resume"
I press F1 => a black screen appears and nothing happens...
please help me

Hello everyone!

For this issue, there's a third solution that no one seems to be talking about:

The BIOS is set to give an alert if the fan is not spinning fast enough! So, if you have efficient fans/coolers on a processor that doesn't heat up too much --> slow fan --> BIOS alert message.

There you go... I also have this problem but it doesn't come from a bad assembly or a broken fan or a thermal pad that sucks.

For illustration: in one of the posts, someone says he had set it to minimum and it was giving him the error message. After increasing the speed: problem solved.

Another illustration: another person suggests disabling the message in the BIOS.

Hi.  Hmm, it's reporting a bug with your processor's fan, so you'll need to open the PC and check if the fan is working properly, and if it's not running, then you'll need to replace it.

I have exactly the same issue with an ASUS K8V SE DELUXE, the fan is not the problem, because when I connect it to the CHASSIS FAN, it works. I contacted ASUS by email, I'm waiting for a response that I hope will be quick. In any case, ASUS motherboards come with a 3-year warranty.

if the fan does not spin, swap the power supply with that of the case chassis to see if it is the fan or its power supply

Hi guys, I just solved the problem by flashing the motherboard's BIOS. Easy with Asusliveupdate. Since then, no more messages and the fan is running great without overheating.

Salut les amis, bon concernant le message "cpu fan error", c'est facile, il y a deux types : soit le ventilateur qui ne tourne pas, alors à ce moment-là, il faut le changer, ou bien c'est un faux message venant du bios et il est facile de le désactiver. Vous allez au bios, vous suivez les étapes, et quand vous trouvez "cpu", vous faites "ignore" et après "save" et vous quittez. Bonne chance.

Hello,
when you buy a new motherboard, you should always format the hard drive to avoid issues!
Then CPU fan = fan error. Either the fan is not properly attached, or it’s dead, or there is a poor contact between the processor and the heatsink (thermal paste).
Last thing to check: make sure the fan is properly connected to the motherboard on CPU FAN as there are several slots for fans. @+

I haven't read everything so maybe what I'm about to say has already been posted. Open your case and check that the fan on the heat sink is properly connected and in the right spot, as this error is extremely common. If the error persists, clean the heat sink well, and check that the cable isn't damaged!

remipele has given the answer, this BIOS alert about the CPU fan speed can mean:

- the fan is not spinning: check the fan, if it's not connected to the right socket or is faulty;

- the fan is spinning at a speed that is too low for the BIOS, which is very common with temperature-regulated systems, because at startup, the CPU is cold, so the fan speed is minimal!

Solutions: either it's adjustable in the BIOS, and we change either the alert threshold or the minimum fan speed,
or it's not adjustable, but since everything is normal, we disable the BIOS alert to have peace.

I have the same problem with a PC I built for my mother, but I also believe it might be related to the BIOS. I have an Asus M2N motherboard with an AMD 4400+, but since everything is cooled by a passive cooler "thermalright SI-128SE with a noctua 120mm fan running at 1200 RPM, I get the message "CPU fan error" at startup, but by pressing the F1 key, everything works fine. I will check with ASUS to see if a BIOS flash could fix the issue.

As for me, I have an ASUS M2N-SLI motherboard with an AMD 5000+ and a Cooler Master Gemin2 cooler + 2 noctua 120mm fans running at 800 RPM, and everything works very well without any error messages.

Well, the same answer as before, you don't have any problem to solve so no flashing to be done.

You just need to find in your BIOS where to disable the error message.

You have a good cooling system.

At my place, below 1800 RPM, I get an error message even though my system runs well below that constantly.

So try to check on that side.

I uninstalled the fan, to put it back on to make sure everything was in place, I installed "Everest Ultimate Edition" to roughly check the temperature, the CPU core 1 is about 16°C and the CPU core 2 is about 24°C which is reasonable. I contacted ASUS support to find a solution because I found no option to uncheck to solve this problem, who advised me to clear the CMOS.  Has clearing the CMOS fixed this kind of problem for anyone?

the clear CMOS doesn’t change anything, you need to disable the alert option in the BIOS

On my 2nd PC, I have an Asus A8V-VM, and the CPU fan starts at 700 RPM, which triggers a "CPU fan error, press F1 to continue" because the alert threshold is set at 800 RPM and is non-adjustable

I disabled it by choosing "disabled" for "Wait for F1 if error", in the "boot settings configuration" menu,
and since then the PC boots normally, but if there is another problem, it will also boot

I think we can also disable the CPU Fan reading in "hardware monitor"
and thus not get this alert at startup, but another alert will wait for F1
(I haven’t tried)

I quickly looked at your issues, I had a similar problem. I solved the problem by unplugging the fan!!! Everything was working fine, but the motherboard wasn't detecting the fan speed. A little cleaning on the connectors and no more issues.

Hello everyone, I've read the different posts and it turns out that I have pretty much the same problem. First, let me give you my configuration:

mobo: MSI MS-7050
processor: AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 bits 2000GHz socket 939
RAM: 1.5 GB
GPU: ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series

Here is my problem:
I wanted to change my motherboard and everything else into another case, which I did.
At startup, it starts normally but then it shows me the following message "CPU fan error" and shuts down the PC after 2 seconds.

I have the same problem on my PC because I changed the motherboard and the processor, but the thing is I have a fan, but it's not the same type of plug as the CPU fan; it's on the CPU CHA fan
So I think I'm going to add another fan or reinstall my software, but if we can disable it in the BIOS, I wouldn't mind some advice; at least that would save me from doing all that work

Hi everyone, I have the same problem, cpu fan error... the only issue is that it makes sense since I don't have a fan on my motherboard but a liquid cooling system and I don't really want to open it up to see if it's properly secured (especially since if it were poorly secured there would be water everywhere and everything would be fried. Moreover, it should have warned me earlier since it only started showing up recently and I haven't changed anything...

In the Asus BIOS, if you look in the last tabs, there's an option: Wait for F1... a message like, set it to disabled and your computer will beep but it'll start up. I have an E2180 dual core which doesn't heat up much and a large tower cooler, the message doesn't worry me because it's true that it's a big cooler for a processor that doesn't heat up, so the fan runs too slowly at startup. That's precarious but that's how it is :P

I’ll share my little note on this old topic.  I just changed my motherboard, no issues so far, but I noticed that my second-hand PC had a broken pin on the cooler, so I decided to replace it, and then I got the CPU fan error message!  This new motherboard causes the processor to be automatically throttled to 1.6GHz at rest, while it’s 2.4GHz by default!? But when the need arises, the 2.4GHz are fully utilized. By changing the cooler, the BIOS seems to have a little adjustment issue because I didn't have it before changing the cooler!!! So in the BIOS, there’s a fan option: the first one optimizes, I don’t remember the second one, and the third one is performance. Now with this cooler that may cool more than the other one and not having found how to adjust the BIOS, one thing is sure, with a new cooler the message appears! Check with maconfig.com if your processor is throttled by the motherboard which automatically takes it out of throttling when necessary. Because the problem might come from that. If I get more info and solve the problem, I’ll try to let you know more.   So there you go, I solved the problem; this fan runs much more than the other one, which explains the message for me. I went into the BIOS and found that the fan is set to [N/A] on the second option which is IGNORED? and the message no longer appears. Since it’s summer and a heatwave, I set the second setting to performance; anyway, a processor is better off being too cooled than not enough, any professional will tell you the lower the temperature the better!

I recently had a "Fan error," it didn't even prompt me to press F1, it just shut down completely.

When I opened my laptop, I saw a lot of dust in the fan.

So I just brushed it with a makeup brush (the bristles are super soft, so it doesn't damage anything) and blew to remove the dust... and miracle, it worked again!
