What is traffic?

Hello,

So a small silly question probably, what is a website’s traffic? I just had mine suspended because I exceeded the allowed traffic, when I asked what it was they answered “Traffic refers to people visiting your site on the internet.”

Isn’t it still not very clear in my head, is it the visits by people? I thought it was the limit of what I could upload to the site per month...

Thanks in advance

T.

Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.27.1

    HI
    syrinxxxx

If you have this problem, it’s because your host has set a traffic limit!

That means they limit the number of gigabytes visitors download from your site in one month!

    Let me explain:
each time a visitor comes to your site, they download your pages in their “temp”

so if you have a limit of 100MB, for example, and you only have one page that is 100KB,

and well after 1000 visitors you will have reached the limit!

    1000 Visitors X 100KB = 100MB !!!

Okay, so the more my site is visited, the more I pay: :D

Bandwidth is the usable data transfer capacity of a network link. It is expressed as capacity-throughput over a given time and is often noted in Mbps (or Mb/s). Thus, 1 Mbps potentially allows 1 Megabit to pass each second. It is then easy to compare bandwidth to the width of a highway: the more lanes there are, the greater the traffic capacity. It is indeed the access of internet users to your site online. It has no relation to disk space.

okay thanks, I think I understood.

So another question: actually I’m allowed 1 GB of traffic per month, if it’s the users doing it I can’t really control it?

I received messages from my hosting provider saying I exceeded this traffic and that they would suspend my site until next month unless I pay for more traffic. There must be a way to control this traffic, so it doesn’t exceed 1 GB (I don’t know anything but a gig is already a lot for me)

If I put a video on my site of about 200 MB, say, and 5 people watch it in full, would we reach 1 GB of traffic?
wow I think I got nothing right actually
      sorry :s

        No, you cannot limit it.

The goal of a website is to be known and visited.

What is the point of restricting access?

Okay, so I have a video of around 200MB on a page of my site and hosting at start1g with OVH.
      Should I change my plan?
I’m not going to pay a little traffic every week for a few more people to watch the video, right? :D

Oh yes, okay if on the OVH server I put HTML pages with a bit of text and I put my video on YouTube, will it count a few KB for the page and then the rest is handled on YouTube?

So basically anything that's a bit heavy should I host it elsewhere?
      Could YouTube work?

Rad, on your site with all the tutorials, how do you do it?

So to fix the traffic issue, I create a Free email address, I open an account with them, I host my video there and then embed it on a page of my OVH-hosted site with an HTML code (a bit like Photobucket)

Could it work like that or do I need to host the whole site with Free?

in any case, thank you very much for all these clear answers !!!

      Hello hello, and best wishes!!!!!
I signed up with Free but on this page.
On another post, I had seen a link that you had put to Free and it seems that it wasn’t the same ...
I can’t seem to find that post anymore...
(To register, do they have to send me a paper file at my place?)

      Thank you in advance!

Traffic is not limited with Free, but the bandwidth for the visitor is...

For some internet users, browsing Free sites is quite painful, so if we have to download large files, let's not even talk about it...

This problem is known and doesn’t bother as many people as that!!

I even manage the FTP from Thailand and navigation works without any problem on my free sites from Bangkok!! a bit tougher here at the Burmese border, but that’s due to the wifi connection at my place!

I even watch the demo videos without any problem!, It depends on the time and the traffic present!! but don’t forget that it’s a shared hosting!!!!

and I have never found anything better in the world for free, so the few problems encountered aren’t that important!! (some PHP restrictions bother me more than the bandwidth)!!

    demo1g at OVH isn’t bad, 1GB

In fact Free is quite irregular, it depends on what we need to host.
If the site is intended to have many visits and many large files, it’s better to avoid.

The problem was that I’m on OVH Start 1GB and they suspended my account because the traffic was 1.17 GB. So I’m removing the video (200 MB) from OVH which makes me pay and hosting it with someone else, like free, for example ;)
