I will start with a question: if you don't know what it's for, why do you want to use it?
Some use it thinking they will become invisible or unidentifiable when consulting dubious sites, which is not guaranteed in the event of legal action that allows authorities to lift anonymity.
Others may think they can gain a reputation as free spirits by hiding the country from which they post.
Some who reside in countries that restrict internet access bypass the blocks.
Finally, others often unsuccessfully try to lift territorial constraints regarding access to downloads or audiovisual programs.

As for the functioning, it depends on the choice, especially if it focuses on subscriptions, with paid services proving to be more effective in case of real necessity.

Even without actively seeking one, it becomes difficult to escape the enticing offers of a trendy business that promises mountains and wonders via browser, operator, security software, or others...
There is indeed no guarantee in terms of security or privacy, but what is often guaranteed are problems and/or slow connection speeds.
The only interest is, for example, for sports fans to pretend to be wherever they are not, or similarly for cheapskates looking for cheaper content in a foreign country, but a number of sites recognize VPN access and deny entry. -
