Hello, Can I delete an MSI file located in Windows Installer? It is infected with a virus that I can't clean despite the help of Goldorack. When I check the properties, it indicates easy pdf publisher.msi. Can I delete it since I never use easy pdf publisher? Thank you for your help

Hi

Yes, you can delete it, but when you start your PC, I think it will tell you that an item has been deleted, but it's nothing serious.

Any program file, if modified or deleted, may stop the program it belongs to from functioning, or even destabilize the entire system (Windows)...

1°) Disable restore points: right-click on 'My Computer' > properties > restore > disable. Confirm.

2°) Update your antivirus. Perform a full scan of it;

3°) Go here for example https://www.bitdefender.fr/ and start the scan at the bottom of the page. BE SURE TO READ CAREFULLY before starting the scan. A- Accept the agreement, B- on the 2 click here, select the drives and actions, the second is the most important: for both actions, choose to ask the user what to do. This will prevent it from deleting an important file perhaps by mistake. If a virus is detected, it will attempt to repair/clean it at first and then will ask you if it can't. C- Start the scan D- Update the virus definition of it. If it fails, go back and try again. Otherwise, it's like having an antivirus on your antivirus that is not up to date: not 100% effective

Let it run. If there is a virus, it could be resolved later. Note that it may take several hours depending on the internet speed, the size and content of the analyzed drives: it will be much slower with a 56k connection with 15 full 1TB drives than with 100 megabit internet on a nearly empty 10GB hard drive!

If it's still not okay afterwards,

4°) Restart in safe mode (usually F8) and perform a full scan with the antivirus. The advantage is that in safe mode, the virus/trojan will not be active with active processes running, thus they can be deleted more easily or at least less difficultly than if you were in "normal" mode.

Overall, your PC is not too bad, not too much software, not too many problems.

Now, several small things:

1°) What did the online Bitdefender scan find?

2°) The bounty games I have known often have open access to viruses and malware of all kinds. If not necessary, delete it.

By default, Windows regularly makes backups of the system and configurations to be able to restore them one day if needed.

So delete the system restore, restart in safe mode, run Malwarebytes for a full scan (yes again!). Save the report. Restart in safe mode and run the Hitjak scan. Restart normally afterwards, attempt to update the antivirus if possible just when the desktop and the antivirus icon appear. Then post the two reports to me.

By the way, why can't you do a scan? Are you opening it in Internet Explorer as I told you and not Firefox? The online scan uses ActiveX controls that hardly work in Firefox but always work in IE.

Try again AFTER IN INTERNET EXPLORER and accept cookies (to change this, go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Privacy tab and for the duration of the updates, set the level to medium (no more), click OK, close Internet Explorer properly, and then restart it.

On one hand, there is some improvement, but on the other hand, it's still not resolved.

When you say that your PC doesn't start anymore, what do you mean?

If you have your Windows CD, insert it right at the beginning during startup as if you were going to install Windows, but instead of installing or deleting, you are going to select REPAIR. Read carefully, let it guide you, it should resolve the startup issue.

The fact that the PC doesn’t start anymore (we need to find out at what point there is a problem) does not come from the restore points you deleted, but from your initial issue that is intensifying, which may not be happening at the right moment, or perhaps a mistake was made?

He starts up and when it gets to Windows XP, it loads but nothing happens. I've had this since I got the Hanitude virus. I restore to a previous date and it works again.

When I insert the Windows CD, it only offers to reinstall and not repair.

Why didn't you mention the extent of the problem right from the start? I could have told you something else before asking you to delete all the backups.

Try to repair it with the Windows CD anyway; if it doesn't work anymore, unfortunately, the only solution left will be the radical one I didn't want to do, but if we can't resolve the issue any other way, we will have to do it.
