How to read .mdb files without Access? Solved

Question

Hello,

I received .mdb files on a CD but Access is not installed on my workstation. Could you let me know if there is any free software that would allow me to read them and how I can obtain it?

Hello,

we can indeed read .MDB files with the ACCESS runtime, but you need to have purchased it, or have someone who developed an application and redistributes the runtime with their app.

There is also the excellent little Australian software QUERYer:
"QUERYer from Chisel Software is a utility that accesses data through the DAO layer (Data Access Objects are used to access databases) included in Microsoft's JET engine."
... which means it is "completely compatible" with Access formats.
In practice, it allows you to read tables and run queries from an Access database.
It is a paid software, but a one-month trial version can be obtained on the French ZDnet site or on that of its publisher:

It is a very convenient tool to use....

Thank you for this post, even though it's old, it perfectly matched my problem.

@DSaumon: Indeed, QUERYing is extremely quick to get the hang of and perfectly clear, thank you. To this day, it is still possible to obtain a 30-day shareware version. I haven't looked into it in detail, but it seems to run perfectly on Vista.

Great tip! You can indeed read .mdb files with Excel; with many limitations, but the tables are accessible, that's the main thing for me! Thanks!

to open your file with the mdb extension
try using StarOffice Base (it's free)
- Click on connect to an existing database
- Select Microsoft Access
- next
- select the file.mdb

and off you go
