Here’s what it’s for :)
About Bonjour
The Bonjour package for Windows brings the zero-configuration networking services of Bonjour to Windows applications such as iTunes, Safari, and AirPort Utility.
Bonjour allows computers, devices, and services to discover each other automatically and mutually using IP-based protocols adhering to industry standards, without the need to enter IP addresses or manually configure DNS servers. This is particularly useful for connecting to devices such as the AirPort base station, Apple TV, or iPhone.
System requirements
Bonjour for Windows supports Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, but it is highly recommended to have one of the following configurations:
Make sure that the latest Service Pack is installed on your computer via Windows Update.
Firewall configuration
Bonjour is a networking protocol that sends and receives network packets over UDP port 5353. If a personal firewall is enabled, you need to ensure that UDP port 5353 is open for Bonjour to function properly. Some firewalls may only partially block Bonjour packets; therefore, if you encounter an intermittent issue, check your firewall settings and ensure that Bonjour is listed as an exception and is therefore allowed to receive incoming packets.
Bonjour correctly configures the Windows firewall upon installation on supported systems.
Known issues
A limited number of virtual private network (VPN) clients interfere with Bonjour. If you find that you can no longer discover network services or print to Bonjour shared printers, try disconnecting your VPN session.
Additional information
Bonjour is commonly installed via third-party software to add zero-configuration networking features to various applications.
Developers can download the Bonjour software development kit (SDK) to include this technology in their applications. To learn more about developing products that use Bonjour and to download the SDK, visit <http://developer.apple.com/bonjour/> (in English).
