how to switch to root mode in Linux? Solved

Question

Here,
I downloaded quite a few programs but to install them I need to switch to root mode and I can't manage to do it...
What should I do?
When I enter the root login, it refuses my password...
Also, I want to recompile my kernel but I can't because it asks for
a second CD, which I don't have. Should I get that?

To switch to root mode, I think you can type "su" in a command window, and then enter your password But if the password doesn't work, then I don't know if there's a solution...

To switch to root mode, you need to act as if you want to log in under a different name. Your desktop will close to make way for a window that asks you what you want to do (select a user, quit, restart). In the username field, you type root and then the password (if there is one). That's all very simple. See you later!

You can make it simpler, as AgnesP84 says, go to Terminals, then Console, and there you type: su root
then ENTER
and your password
and ENTER
To see where you are, type: ls
