Good evening,
I personally just finished installing Catia V5 R18 on my PC. Since I don't have Catia V5 R17, with a bit of research on the internet and some knowledge, I managed to get it working on Vista.
You just need to install Catia V5 R18 from an XP workstation. Therefore, we will choose a removable disk (like an external hard drive or USB stick) as the installation directory.
Once the installation is complete, plug your removable media into your Vista workstation. (All the following operations are performed under Vista)
Then create a folder called "Catia v5r18" in the "Documents" directory (the name of the created folder is not important).
Go to the installation directory Directory\Catia V5R18\intel_a\code\bin and execute CATIAENV.exe.
Click on the "Option" tab and then on "Global storage directory" => Select the directory you created earlier. Perform the same operation for "User storage directory." (NB: I'm not sure if this paragraph is necessary -> let me know)
Then click on the "Environment" tab and "New." Enter your name in "Name" (that makes sense),
the path should normally point to your installation directory. The "Server" box should be unchecked, and the "Replace existing environment" box should be checked. Finally, click "OK."
That's it! You can launch Catia from the new shortcut that appeared on the desktop and which should normally bear your name!
Have Fun ;)
