SOLUTION TO ERROR 1628 FOR CALL OF DUTY 4 AND RESULTING SOLUTION FROM ERROR code_post_gfx_mp.ff
Error 1628 is a result in my case of installing patch 1.4. After installing patch 1.4, I had an error coming from "code_post_gfx_mp.ff". Having not found any thread, I tried to fix it myself. According to this link (www.cod4mw.fr)]www.cod4mw.fr..., you just need to "move the infamous file from the English folder to the French folder and you're good to go!"
So I tried something along those lines, but not exactly. As a result, the game wouldn't launch at all and displayed a second game window marked "Error" as the title. So I attempted to uninstall the game and I got error 1628.
Here is the solution for a complete reinstall!
INTRODUCTION
First of all, it should be noted that this is an InstallShield software error after an unintended file manipulation. This happens in my case after applying the "CoD4MW-1.4" patch.

After applying this patch, I was no longer able to log into any server. I had a rather annoying script error. So, I tried to uninstall the game and reinstall it properly, but to no avail.

PROBLEM SOLUTION
***ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED!***
Required Software:
#1:
TuneUp Utilities 2006,2007 (*Not tested with 2008 and different menu)
#2:
Search your hard drives for Windows and application files by looking for: "call of duty 4"
#3:
Manually delete all files, except shortcuts, related to the installation of call of duty 4. For example, "C:/program files/activision/call of duty 4 modern warfare" which is the default directory. In my case, I installed it in D:Program Files because of my use of multiple partitions.
#4:
Open the TuneUp Utilities software and perform a "TuneUp RegistryCleaner" which will delete the annoying file entries
#5:
Stop the punkbuster service running in the background, called "punkbstra" with the task manager or tuneup utilities
#6:
Once step 3 is complete, still in TuneUp Utilities, select the Management and Control tab and open "TuneUp Uninstall Manager". You will then have the complete list of programs installed on your computer. This program cannot work miracles since you have already manually deleted the game directory... but not the entry in "Add or Remove Programs" in the control panel. So select call of duty 4 in the list and click "Delete" using the menu bar button.
#7:
Delete the entire directory "D:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{E48469CC-635E-4FD5-A122-1497C286D217}" but WITHOUT DELETING THE FOLDER!
Go to the registry and delete all keys on call of duty 4 and make sure you delete these keys and their trees completely:
This key contains information about version 1.4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\0E336DB38FB499441994880F67D744C9\InstallProperties
This one for 1.3
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\E8C1C050D4A4F2C49BEA766EE09EB1F7\InstallProperties
This one for 1.2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\9731415E9D2BCBB4BBA28550455117DD\InstallProperties
This one for 1.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\CC96484EE5365DF41A2241792C682D71\InstallProperties
These results are approximate because when searching, the search engine finds, for example, "InstallLocation" which contains the keyword call of duty 4 as a registry value. But upon checking the other keys, one realizes that they are all important to the game, SO THEY MUST ALL BE DELETED!
#8:
Return to the registry and search for call of duty 4. Delete each entry (Not very long...) However, in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call of Duty 4\, do not delete the entry "codkey", which is your cd key. Why? If you have, for example, installed the game with steam and you want to get your cd key, it is found here! Keep it safely and do not reply to this topic on this forum! ;)
Redo step #4 to delete the annoying registry entries
Run the patch WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe found on the DVD, but only that!!!!!
#9:
Take your .ISO or your original game DVD (.ISO is possible if you bought the game on steam and wanted to have the installation DVD from a friend with your own key!) and copy the entire DVD into the directory mentioned in step #7. This will take a few minutes. Once this is done, go to this folder and double click on "setup.exe"
It will ask you to uninstall the game properly and will ask if you want to keep your profiles and everything! Do it!
***Step #9 is very important because if you do not do it you will have a windows installer error.***
#10 :
After carefully completing all these steps, ensure that the punkbuster service is not running in the background and reinstall the game. Apply patches 1.2 to 1.4. If you are not sure, do not apply 1.4 immediately and test if it works. If you find yourself with the same error, stay on 1.3 like the thousands of other people who have had this very annoying script error that caused error 1628 during uninstallation:

This solution is not guaranteed to work but gives positive results about 90% of the time. Some variables on your system will make you one of the 10% unlucky ones for whom it does not work.
There you go, I hope my 45 minutes of typing and sweating have helped you!
See you online so I can test my M4 Soccom on you ;)
