Hello,
As twisted as it may be, one will still need to go through an email client to open the eml file, which is counter to webmails.

Why not use an email software in which the emails will be archived locally without needing to perform any manipulation?-
Hello Brucine, I need to gather several received and sent emails to group them in a single folder I have on my desktop as proof of a case! So, please kindly let me know how I should do it in a basic way, to transfer them to the desktop, as I'm not a whiz with computers! The problem is that I have to gather a lot of received and sent emails that cover a long period of over a year and a half! Thank you
Didn't I provide you with a link to the instructions you're following?
If there's a collection, you'll have to do it one by one and you'll spend your life on it, which brings us back to the point of integrating Gmail into an email client like Thunderbird?
But in this case, specifically regarding Gmail due to the specific authentication, it's indeed not very simple:

There is no other way to proceed and no other high-volume method than to go through an email manager where you would import your emails.
A webmail, Gmail or another, by definition, is not "yours" but online: if we prioritize frequent or numerous archiving, we must use something else.

Hello,
The emails saved in a folder are stored in .eml format.
They can then be read by a mail client. If you don’t have any installed, it’s Windows’ Mail that will read your saved emails.
With Gmail, you can only save your emails one by one. If you don’t have too many, it’s doable.
Here’s how to proceed:
- You open the email in Gmail and click on the three dots in the top right corner of the reading window, then select Download message.
- The message is downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer. (Sort the files by modification date to easily find it). It has a .eml extension.
- It’s up to you to transfer it to the folder you placed on the Desktop.
- Proceed this way for each message to be saved.
By clicking on one of the saved messages in eml format, it should open. You will find it complete with any attachments.
What is well conceived is clearly expressed,

And the words to say it come easily.

I would like to point out that I completely agree with brucine's message <6>.
If there are 10 or 20 emails to download, we can do it one by one. It's not unfeasible and it doesn't take forever.
But if it's an operation that needs to be repeated or if there are a large number of emails involved, it's better to install Thunderbird, which will back up all the emails at once, on the computer.
We can't do it any other way, for example with copy/paste, because emails, originally, are not just simple files.
It's the backup or download process that turns them into files (with the eml extension).
