apt-get update and cdrom

Question

Hello I would simply like to know if apt-get update is related to internet connectivity
is it normal for an error message to be returned in case of a cdrom or dvd in sources.list?

Hello,  It depends on the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list (and any additions made in /etc/apt/sources.list.d). You can reference repositories from a CD-ROM or from the Internet.  Good luck

Hello and thank you for the reply.

Indeed, I looked in sources.list which updates with apt-cdrom add. But apt-get update returns an error message I didn’t have at the start with the 10.2 ISO, DVD 1, 2 and 3. I deleted them since I ran out of space after they had been used to install my virtual machine (VirtualBox) Debian, and the apt-get install or update went fine. Since loading 10.3, apt-cdrom add works fine and updates the source, but updates and installs no longer succeed. Is this a bug due to the virtual machine?

Sorry for the late reply. In your case, here is what the cleaned /etc/apt/sources.list file should look like (for me, stable has been replaced by testing, i.e., currently Debian Bullseye)

If your problem is resolved, that’s what matters.

Just to try to clarify the gray areas:

- apt searches for repositories in the file /etc/apt/sources.list (standard repositories) and any files contained in /etc/apt/sources.list.d (non-standard repositories, one file per application, e.g. /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list)

- these files contain two types of repositories: deb (binary packages, the ones we actually use) and deb-src (source packages, only used by people who want to recompile a software, which is exceptional in practice, which is why I personally remove them)

- each repository is associated with an "address": typically a URL, CD-ROM, etc. If a CD-ROM source is defined, then the corresponding CD-ROM must be inserted into the drive. In practice it is often a bad idea to keep these sources after installation. We only keep the internet sources. They can remain after an installation done with a CD-ROM. In that case, simply delete the lines related to CD-ROM repositories in these files by editing them with root rights (e.g. via the command pkexec gedit /etc/apt/sources.list), or comment them out by adding a # in front of them.

Personally I recommend installations done from a USB key in netinstall. This ensures that, at the end of the installation, Debian is completely up to date right away. In addition, the repositories will be configured directly since the installation is done from the internet repositories. And finally, fewer and fewer PCs (especially laptops) have a CD-ROM drive, so it’s better to get used to installing from a USB key.
