Hello,
I occasionally receive updates for Java, but I’m told that I haven't used this software in over 6 months.
What is Java used for, and if I’m not using it, can I uninstall it?

Hello,
To run applications written in this language.
Read: Java: what it's for, how to install it and update it.
In general, it’s useless.
Finally, you don't need it except for Minecraft, for example.

Thank you for your response. I will uninstall it.
Hello,
Java is a programming language.
For programs written with it to work, such as Minecraft for example, the Java program needs to be installed. If you don't have any applications requiring Java, you can uninstall it without concern.
If you can't uninstall it because you need it, but you no longer want it to ask you for updates every few mornings, you can disable this program at startup. In Windows 10, in the task manager, under the startup tab, select Java and disable it.
Best regards
