Friends Who Appear on Our Facebook Profile

Hello,
I have a question: are the 6 friends that appear as thumbnails on our profile really chosen randomly?
While searching through Facebook's help pages, I found that "Friends with whom you have the most public interactions appear first on your profile. Public interactions include posts on your wall, comments, and shared events you've participated in—Facebook never shows your friends based on profiles you've visited the most or people you interact with via email or instant messaging."
Facebook thus seems to say that it does not consider instant messages or people who frequently view our profile. However, I'm not convinced because I have in my list of these 6 friends people I message the most, as well as those who view my profile the most, even though I have no public interactions with them on Facebook, only private ones. Furthermore, it's always the same 10-15 people that keep appearing out of my 500 Facebook friends. So is the list really made randomly?
