Unstable desktop icons

The question was worth asking although, as I mentioned in my first message, I didn’t have this problem for two years with 50 icons.

I tested with a reduced number of icons and unfortunately, I still have the problem.

Have you checked the arrangement of your icons by right-clicking on the desktop >> View >> Sort by >> Align to grid


You mentioned that you decreased the number of icons on the desktop, but by how much approximately? Can you try to "stick" about fifteen on each side to check if everything is still the same?

With this layout you cannot use the 'align icons to grid' command
Icons need to be placed one by one with the mouse; that's what I've been doing for two years with Windows 10 without any problems with nearly 50 icons that I've just reduced to 30.
Reducing further would take away all interest from my presentation.

I understand why, as it's written quite personalized like the desktop, so not too modifiable!
Unless you really insist on your presentation, I don't really have a solution to prevent the icons from "wandering" around, but I suggest a simple yet very effective application launcher where you can place all the icons currently on your desktop as shown.
This launcher is called MadAppLauncher and it can contain up to 300 icons or shortcuts;
You can either leave this launcher permanently visible on the desktop or hide it in the notification bar at the bottom right. It can be launched at Windows startup, and as soon as you click on an icon to launch a program or open a link, it closes immediately and goes back to the notification bar. Personally, I haven't found a better application

With 30 icons on my desktop, it's working quite well, and I'm going to stick with that.
But I still don't have an explanation for this instability of the icons that occurred a week ago, whereas everything was running smoothly with 50 icons since the installation of Windows 10.

On other forums, I read that the culprit was the latest update of Windows 10. This update had another drawback: the removal of the ability to modify the advanced display settings (among other things, the font sizes for menus and others).

It does indeed seem to be related to a new Windows update.
Solution found online (source below):

1. Key combination Windows + R
2. Type regedit.exe in the window that opened and confirm

In the folders on the left:

3. Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

On the right side, 2 values to modify, IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing, which it is recommended to keep the values in a text document just in case:

4. IconSpacing : try with -1215
5. IconVerticalSpacing : try with -900
6. Restart the system and "play" with these two values until the icon movement works.

It is a somewhat advanced solution so I advise you to follow the recommendation to back up the two values just in case an issue arises.

I read somewhere that it's wise to back up the registers in case something goes wrong.
Would you be kind enough to give me the process for that?

I really needed a well-organized desktop with dozens of icons

after consulting the forums, I tried the simplest method:

- disable snap to grid
- refresh
- and refresh each time I deliberately moved one or more icons.

It was effective from the very first attempt.
