Meaning of green dot

Hello,
I wanted to know what the green dot and "active" mean on Messenger: active on Messenger and/or also on Facebook?
Is it possible that after being logged out of Messenger and Facebook, the green dot remains for a few minutes?

You can be active on your phone without being on Facebook or Messenger and still show up as online, actually?

What do you mean?... Like, we call someone and we're showing as online on Facebook???... Or we're looking at something unrelated and we still have the green dot??... Is it always like that?

the green dot has nothing to do with being active or not.
the green dot indicates that your app is open and you are online.
