I don't have a microphone icon on Messenger.

I have an iPhone 4s, iOS 9.2.

On Messenger, I don't have a microphone icon to send voice messages to my friends.

    Hello, press the button with the 3 little dots in a conversation above your keyboard and then press "voice". If the voice button doesn't appear, maybe you haven't enabled the permission to use the microphone in Messenger, if that's the case: settings -> Messenger -> enable microphone. Sorry for the nonsensical sentences and it's late :-)
