Bus controller SM = System Management. The drivers can be found in the following package:
- Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility
- or directly here:

Hello,
I had the same question mark with my ECS K7S5A motherboard (SiS 735 chipset) and XP Pro. It disappeared after I uninstalled Motherboard Monitor 5. That said, this question mark didn't prevent my PC from working!

Hi guys, I recently had this problem while reinstalling XP Pro, and I ended up solving it by downloading the Intel Chipset 5.0 driver from my PC manufacturer's website. So it was due to that. Good luck to you, hoping it will be the same for you.

Hello everyone, just so you know, you can solve this problem by downloading this file:
(My config: Intel iP GHz motherboard, integrated LAN...) the missing controller is just a piece of the drivers for the network card.)
http://www.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/inf.htm
this link takes you directly to the file to download.
Problem resolution guaranteed. lol good luck to everyone and see you soon.

  @mestdagtHello,
this bus controller SM is causing me too many problems. When XP detects it, the serial mouse no longer works. And now the mouse isn't working at all.
I updated XP but to no avail.

Find the *.inf file that manages the CP fan and displays the temperature(s)... check the manufacturer’s website of your motherboard...
  Good luck

@PauloThe bus controller SM is none other than the drivers managing the processors. When installing the new generations of motherboards such as ASUS P4XXX… or MSIXXX…:
  1°) Install Windows
2°) Install the drivers provided on the motherboard CD.
3°) If you haven't installed the drivers for the card, it's still time to do so.

N.B.: Be careful about the brand of the processor (INTEL, AMD, etc…).

  Phew! Good luck.

  Best regards from GUYANE.
Everything will be back to normal.

Hello,
Thank you, but I'm not sure it works on a Dell. In fact, I reformatted everything and I no longer have this problem. The drivers for each component are on the utility CD that I got with XP Pro.

Thanks anyway for your response. I think we can conclude that the manufacturer is where you find a solution for issues like these.
Best regards.
Ch.

The solution from LaSpada works perfectly. Thanks to him.
Download Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF Update Utility) (address in message 17 from LaSpada). Install it, and the yellow question mark for the SM bus controller disappears.
Successful test on Orline PC, QDI motherboard, and Pentium 4, under Windows XP.

In my opinion, it's a Saitek Manager controller (USB joystick).

You need to download the driver for the motherboard chipset. In my case, it worked. In my case, it was "INF plug and play for Intel chipset."
