Hello, I'm looking to format (wipe everything on the hard drive) an iMac without the installation CD. Is it possible?

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 44.0.2403.107

Good evening,

In order to completely erase a Mac's hard drive, it is imperative that the hard drive is not "in use."
This means that the Mac must not have booted from its internal disk, as it is impossible to erase a hard drive while its system is in use. It's logical.

Therefore, to erase the internal hard drive, the Mac must boot from a different media than its internal disk.

For this, the Mac must boot from a valid CD or from a hard drive connected via Firewire. (G5 Macs cannot boot from a USB-connected drive).

Conclusion: you need a CD that has a valid and recognized system by the Mac. This means a valid Mac OS installation CD for the Mac. Not a gray CD or DVD delivered with another Mac, but a Universal DVD.

Moreover, a Mac cannot boot from a system older than the system delivered with the Mac, which means that if the Mac was delivered with Mac OS 10.5, it cannot boot with Mac OS 10.4 - Therefore, you need to find a Universal Mac OS 10.5 installation CD on the second-hand market.

Another possibility is to download a Live CD of Ubuntu, making sure to take a valid version for this Mac. For example "Ubuntu_PowerPC_feisty"
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/feisty
or this Live CD:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

Another option is to find someone who has a Firewire hard drive with Mac OS X 10.5 installed.

Note that if the Mac is protected by an Open Firmware password, it will not accept to boot from another media, as this type of password is intended to protect the Mac against theft.

EDIT: here is the type of CD needed:
