IPhone bubble "is typing..."

Hello,

A friend and I both have an iPhone 3GS. She showed me that when I was replying to a text message, a bubble appeared at the bottom left of the screen with three little dots indicating to the future recipient "is typing" like on MSN for example...
The problem is that I don't have this bubble, we compared the message settings, they are identical and she hasn't installed any app for this famous bubble...

Could someone help me?

    Are you on iOS 5 or 5.0.1?
    Do you have iMessage activated?
    And in your friend's contact on your phone, did you set her number as "iPhone" and not "mobile"?
