it is not the same architecture (internal structure), nor the same generation:
the Core i3 is newer, based on the Nehalem architecture, and it is also more powerful than the Core 2 Duo at the same frequency

Yes, it's more powerful than Core 2 Duo at the same frequency, but for example, mine is an i3 at 2 GHz and it's more powerful than the Core 2 Duo at 2.4 GHz.
