CCleaner: clean free space

Hello, I've been using CCleaner for a short time and I've noticed an option: clean the free space.
What is its purpose?
Why is this option unchecked?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 3.6.6

When a file is deleted, what it contained is not removed from the disk. There are ways to recover deleted files.

Wiping free space prevents this recovery.
