Difference between quitting and reducing? Solved

Question

Hello, my question is simple: on a window, in the top left corner, there is a red button to close the window, and an orange button to minimize it. In both cases, the window does not close but is minimized in the dock (blue light under the icon)  But then, what is the difference between quitting and minimizing?  When should you quit, and when should you minimize?  Sincerely.

Hello  Gijoe34's explanations are correct, and to add by summarizing ... :  Red dot with a cross when hovering the pointer = closing the current window, several other application windows may remain open  Red dot with a black dot inside = closing a document window that hasn't been saved after modification.  Yellow dot = minimizing the concerned window to the dock. Other windows from the same application can remain open on the desktop  Green dot = switching between the last two used sizes of the concerned window. Does not affect other windows of the same application.  Cmd-Q = quitting the application  Cmd-H = completely hiding the application and all its windows - even if the application continues to run.. In most cases, "quit" quits and "minimize" minimizes :)  So: "quit" closes the application and the window "minimize" does not close the application but hides the window (which can be reopened by clicking in the taskbar)  However, some particular applications do not close when clicking on the "X": they minimize, or only close the window to run in the background, ... but that remains quite marginal. -- The urgent is done, the impossible is in progress, For miracles, expect a delay...

Yoan, on my Mac, and on several others, clicking the red cross has never really made me quit an application, just close the window, which means that if I reopen the app, it goes back to the starting point. Basically, it's as if I had quit the application except that it's still active in the dock. Examples: if I do this with Firefox, I end up on the homepage. Or if I do this with Word, it opens a new document, a blank page.

Hello  You don't see the difference, so here's a little example:  When I work on GIMP with several photos, it opens multiple windows (one per image). When I'm done with one of those images, I can either click the yellow button, which minimizes the window to the dock, but if I don't need it anymore, what good does it do me to have it in the dock? So I click the red button. If the red button quit the software (GIMP), my other photos would also close, and that's not at all what I want; I just want to close the window that I'm interested in.  So yellow button: minimize the window  Red button: close the window   See you later!

small addition:  when the launched application can only have one window like system preferences, calculator, iphoto, etc.  pressing the red button closes not only the window but also the application.   see you!
