Different first page header and margin Solved

Question

Hello,

I am creating formatted documents for an association and I would like to create a template in Word 2007 with a header AND different margins (notably the top margin) for the first page only.

So that, once on the second page, another header WITH a different top margin will be present, and this will continue until the end of the document.

I’ve looked for a long time using section breaks, page breaks, etc. Nothing seems to work, I just can't do it... Try it yourself, you'll see it's not easy!

Otherwise, simpler:

You select the text to which you want to apply different margins than the rest of the document (in this case, your first page).

Then you go to the "layout" panel, in the margin section.

There, you set your margins for the first page (for example, 2cm on the left and right, 3cm at the top and bottom) and under the preview, there is a dropdown menu where you need to choose "apply to: selected text".

And there you go! :)

In Word 2007, you need to go to the "Page Layout" tab.
In the second box called "Page Setup," click on the tiny icon in the bottom right corner: a pop-up will open.
There, you will find a checkbox "Different first page."

That's it :)

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as ndsaerith says. Because while checking the "Different first page" option allows for a different first header and footer, it does not allow for different margins. The solution to modify the layout involves inserting a section break.
However, in a template like yours, the section break is not an appropriate solution.

I can offer you a workaround that works very well even though it's a bit makeshift: you start with the principle of the different first page as indicated by ndsaerith.
Then, if your first header consists of an image, ensure that this image has a large white space below it that corresponds to the desired margin size. You give your image text wrapping so that you won't be able to enter text higher up.
If you also need different right and left margins, use the same method, this time with a white frame.

After that, you need to plan your two headers and two layouts from the start.
So, you create a 2-page document (a page break is enough to get a second page), with your two different headers, using the indicated method.

Once everything is OK, you delete your second page, but your second header will still be saved.
You save it as a template.

When you create a document from this template, your layout and header will change automatically as soon as a second page is created.

Just to clarify: I’m assuming that the second page will be created automatically by a page break while entering text. Of course, if your first page is a cover page, this solution is not suitable!

In Word 2010, on the first page, create a continuous section break and apply the desired margin to this first section. The default margin will remain for the rest of the document.
