2 - 2 - The Disadvantages of the Internet
Like in other civilizational eras, this one (the new Internet civilization) has both positive and negative consequences. (58) So, as the saying goes, "the more things change, the more they stay the same." Every new invention often brings both a host of advantages and disadvantages. The majority of users surveyed seem well aware of the negative consequences of the Internet.

Only 31.7% of users find the Internet free of negative effects. For others, however, the network's harmful aspects are numerous, ranging from risks of corruption (23.3%) to racism (1.7%), including lack of control (18.3%), unchecked information (11.7%), and risks of cultural dislocation faced by individuals (6.7%), etc.

The fears expressed by users are well-founded and legitimate, as the Internet is a Wild West of a new age where all kinds of excesses are possible. (59) These fears are mainly linked to online content. The Internet contains many sites whose mere visit can shock the conscience of children, teenagers, and adults who sometimes indulge in anything and everything on the network in cybercafés. These sites, easily accessible, are numerous, but we will only mention those that users' responses have directly or indirectly referred to. They are:

2- pornographic and pedophilic sites: these sites involve the public description and communication of explicitly erotic acts, that is to say, stimulating sexual desire and obscene, meaning dirty, shameful, and degrading. The Internet offers numerous sites that provide pornography and videos using images of minors, which can infringe on decency. Pedophilic sites are very prevalent on the Internet. In 2003, they saw a 70% increase, according to the study report from the Italian association for children's rights dated February 6. They were estimated at more than 261,653 sites by the end of the same year, with 60% located in the USA, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, Italy, and Spain. (60)

(59) "Does the Internet pose a threat to public order?" Expertises of information systems, July-August 1996, page 226, quoted by Cécile Bernat, 1997, p. 81.

(60) www.innocenceindanger.org

The numerous late-night visits made during the surveys in cybercafés have revealed the extent of the pornography phenomenon. People, particularly men of all ages, typically engage in passionate consumption of pornography starting from 11 PM. However, there is a glaring absence of deliberate policy from various state authorities aimed at curbing this harmful freedom.

The same laxity is observed among cybercafé managers. (61) Furthermore, posters intended to prohibit this practice in the premises are made and placed in such a way as to raise doubts about their genuine willingness to put an end to this phenomenon.

2- sectarian and extremist sites: these sites are also unmanageable and uncontrolled. They are often linked to sects or religions seeking to influence young people, potential followers, through unbridled proselytism;

2- racist sites: they post all kinds of remarks against certain communities (Black, Arab, Jewish, for example) and advocate racial hatred, the denial of ethnic plurality, and the refusal of the Other;

2- sexist and homophobic sites: these sites often disseminate messages that desecrate human dignity. They ridicule, insult, and humiliate women while undermining their semblance of respectability.

All these sites are highly dangerous and harmful to adolescents in search of their identity and personality, whose minds are not yet equipped for critique. Furthermore, the risks of cultural dislocation cited by 6.7% of respondents are also real. The Internet imposes modernity and leads to the universal dissemination of the same ideals and behaviors. It fosters globalization. However, modernity transforms all existing civilizations, including those of the West. It is not Westernization, but a universal change in the fundamental conditions of any civilization, of all civilizations. (62) Under these conditions, "acculturated" individuals or societies are those that do not possess a real capacity for discernment and are not equipped with their own values to resist the absorbing temptation of those of others.

(61) Managers themselves say they are powerless in this situation simply because the user pays his money.

Merci beaucoup <3 ;p
