Hello,
could someone explain to me, starting today there is an Acer offer at Arty, Boulanger, Auchan, etc., an ACER ASPIRE X3810-EK7S with 8 GB of RAM, a 4-core processor, and 32-bit Windows. However, I've always understood that 32-bit doesn't manage memory beyond 4 GB, so what is this from Acer??? Thank you

Good evening. Following the purchase of the PC in question last night.
I am currently doing the numerous Win Update updates necessary for the 64 SP1 premium (25 in total and quite lengthy, despite my 6 Meg ADSL). Prior to that, and especially before connecting it to the Web, I made the Acer recovery backup (3 DVDs) + 1 DVD for the drivers. More than 2 hours of "burning"... But I should be okay just in case ;-)
Otherwise, I will be able to order Seven in Premium (for about €17 I believe for shipping) as soon as it is released.
As for the "heating," I live near Nîmes in the Gard, and today, even this evening, it is beastly hot... So yes, the PC is "heating" ... But what do we call heating?? For now, despite a slight fan noise, it’s not very bothersome... The case seems quite ventilated... And the tower is warm, but nothing more...
As for the sound output, there is indeed 7.1 management and an SPDIF connection (I believe that's the term).
The Vista 64 performance indices of the machine: 5.9 being the max for Vista I believe
Proc: 5.9
Memory: 5.9
Graphics (Aero): 5.9
Game Graphics: 5.5 (that's the reference index then!)
Disk: 5.9
Not too bad after all...
More interesting: the disk is delivered partitioned into C: and D:, each 340GB
The D: partition is very useful when reformatting the main C: partition
The most shocking thing for me: the DVD drive is vertical... It’s strange, but the DVDs hold up anyway ;-)
A bit of practice before answering other questions...-

- Regarding games, I'm not a big player, so I don't really know anything about them.. And especially, I'm working guys, and since 2 days ago (the date of purchase), I haven't really had the time to install anything!
I'm on vacation tonight for a week, so if I have some time, between the beach and the pool, I'll try to test a few games (I've actually started downloading some big playable demos).. In particular, The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, since my girlfriend plays that ;-)
There you go..

I don't really understand why you opened your case to remove the video card?!
Indeed, the integrated VGA output video card on the motherboard is disabled since the PC is equipped with a dedicated ATI 4650... And in the box, there was already a VGA/DVI-i adapter... Too bad, because by opening the case, you must have peeled off the little warranty sticker (?), so now you lose your 1-year warranty with Acer!!
Regarding the backup, indeed you shouldn't have done an Update... But you can still go back, uninstall the updates done by Windows, or even restore to the automatic restore point created by Windows before the updates were installed... And then make your 3 system backup DVDs..
And if you want to add a hard drive, the e-sata port is for that via an external enclosure (what I just installed)..
But come on, let's be serious guys, if 750GB and 8GB of RAM aren't enough!!!
You can't be serious, or else you should remember to read the specifications of the machine before buying it ;-)
Otherwise, the X3810 in question can be easily found in Acer's support, download center here:
http://www.acer.fr/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=fr&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=291&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=8&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=291&CountryISOCtxParam=FR&ctx1g.c2att92=25&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=1143633635
And to respond to Viking, indeed it's a bad idea to format.. or you have to buy a PC from a builder without an operating system.. As for Windows Seven, it's as simple as that..
http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/
It will cost you 16€
But I find that this PC works quite well... -
No Viking, I didn't make that mistake; I saw that it was for Macs and not for PCs, but I called (well, my mom did), and they said to call back because no technician was available...
to be continued........................-
Yep, I had the same issue but with my Flatron 2361 screen.
For my part, there is a "source" button on the side of my screen.
You need to connect your screen via the DVI port and press this "source" button (if you have one) until a message appears on the screen notifying you that the DVI output of your monitor is activated.

Hello,
I just placed an order on Darty.com for in-store pickup, so I have ten days to return it if it doesn't work out.
It's going to be quite a change from my old P4/2.4GHz that's really struggling with video encoding...
I need to check if overheating is an issue and if it makes a lot of noise; I really don't like loud sounds!
I'm going to try installing WinXP in a dual partition; I don't need 8GB of RAM, and I have an old multifunction printer that doesn't work with Vista 64-bit. It might not be easy to find drivers…
What did you do for WiFi? USB key or internal card?
I didn't quite understand about the DVD backup; it's not on the hard drive anyway, is it?-
Hi webvan,
for the Wi-Fi, I believe I've understood from previous messages that there wasn't much space inside...
for the DVDs, it's better to have an external backup: more flexible and safer (and more independent because I guess you can boot from it): I bought this computer yesterday and I did it: a bit long but it worked right away for me (THANKS to everyone else for the explanations not to do winupdate+ and not to connect the network before that...)
I still have a problem: I can't get winUpdate to work. After different scenarios, I think it's not related to this computer but to my network configurations: I have 2 PCs (one running XP, one running Vista, the Acer) behind a Wanadoo eXtense PRO router (I know it's not recent...) and it had been working fine for 6 years. They are both on floating IP and DNS: the router gives them their addresses; it seems that Windows Update doesn't work because it can't find the DNS of microsoft.com but I had that I don't really know why.
The symptom is strange:
- the computer running XP has full internet access behind my router
- the computer running Vista Premium Home (the Acer 64 bits) has internet access for basic sites but not for Microsoft, Google, SNCF, and other big ones like that. Yet, in network and sharing, everything is fine.
Otherwise, I tested the following without success:
- disconnecting Avast and Windows Firewall to see if they were blocking
The other leads:
- a malware on the ACER? I doubt it because it’s new from yesterday and it happened from the start
- is there a major bug on win update in 64 bits SP1 home premium?
??

I would like to know if it is possible to change the graphics card, because the size of the tower is small and it scares me a bit...
-
Marketing. :)
I just looked, there is no reference to 32 or 64 bits, so we'll see. -
-
Ah indeed, but if we look at the comments:
Unbeatable value for money
The tower performs well at €500; Acer has really slashed prices again!
Be careful, after purchasing in-store, it's Vista 64bit and not 32 bit, hence the management of 8GB of RAM.
The only downside is that it's a mini tower and it heats up quickly and a lot (a recurring issue with Acer).
So the best thing to do is to call to get to the bottom of it :)- Actually, I just bought this PC tonight at Planet Saturn, and it comes with Windows Vista Premium 64-bit (it's even labeled on the side of the PC). Unlike Darty where they seem to provide Vista 32-bit?!
Prefer the 64-bit version, the only one capable of managing RAM beyond 3GB (here it's 8GB!!)
And it's the future!

For the "purists," I just installed 3D Mark Vantage to test the Acer X3810 (with VISTA 64 SP2 + ATI 4650 updated to the latest version of ATI).
The test results are here:
https://www.3dmark.com/login?resultId=1323358&resultType=19
In the middle and in blue are the results before the ATI card driver update. In green after the update.
They might disappoint some gamers regarding the capabilities of this machine and the Radeon HD 4650 with 1GB of DDR3.
I don't know how valid this test is.. It's the Trial version of 3DMark..
I'll still play to get a better sense of it ;-)

I just bought an x3810-ek7s
I confirm it's indeed a win home premium x64. That said, I was surprised when you open the box to find 2 blank DVDs (does it come with 4?!), 1 document on the warranty in 3815 languages, 1 ridiculous doc on how to plug in the power... and that's it, no information on the e-sata,
Another surprise for me who wasn't used to the mini-tower... no space for an additional hard drive, not even a slot to add a fax card for example... and for the memory, all slots are occupied: 4 sticks of 2GB.
I am facing two PROBLEMS:
1) unable to burn the restoration DVDs, each time I get an error 0x205. This is worrying, since we don't have a Windows CD on hand
2) the VGA output is not working! I have two screens, one DVI and one VGA. Impossible to get anything on the VGA, not even the BIOS information is displayed there (so it's not a Windows issue)
Has anyone tested the VGA output?
I might eventually have to get an adapter like HDMI/VGA (ugh..)
Apparently there is no email support from Acer-
I'm answering my own question, it might help someone...
I just switched on my neurons: On the video card, there are 2 outputs: HDMI and DVI, on the motherboard there is a VGA output. So it's normal, either the motherboard handles the video if there is no graphics card, or the latter takes precedence.
I removed the graphics card, the VGA was working.
As for my restoration DVD problem, when I turned on the PC, the network cable was plugged in and Windows updated, and I rebooted. I think Acer's software crashes because of that.
Which doesn't particularly help me, since occasionally Vista needs to be "repaired" and I don't have a CD... let's hope I receive Windows Seven before the next crash (if Acer isn't as bad with their support as I've read everywhere)...
So advice: do not plug in a network cable before making the restoration disks.- Thank you for this information, when we contact Acer France, the only response we get is "contact a reseller", I've received this response by email I don't know how many times, obviously after a while it gets annoying, but apparently in France they're not paid to do much!
I bought an HP a while ago and I had problems with burning formatting DVDs, but I contacted HP support and they sent me brand new DVDs for free by mail!
Furthermore, if you go to the Acer France website and look for this acer X3810 product, well it doesn't exist, so they sell products that you can't find anywhere with of course no specifications available!
I really like this little box!

Like some, I have the same problem with backups. So if it crashes, I have nothing to reinstall the OS.
I intended to reformat the drive to switch to XP Cox or possibly to Ubuntu, but I don't think that's a good idea.
How can we get this Windows 7?
Thank you. -
Olive made a mistake regarding the price of the upgrade to Seven. It will cost you €14.90 instead of €16.00.
Otherwise, which monitor did you attach to the ACER?
For my part, a LG W2343T-PF - 23 " (61 cm) FULL HD 1080p. -
Thanks Olive for the info. Indeed, the shipping costs are 14.90 to receive Windows 7, which certainly isn’t worth more than that price if it’s the same junk as the other Microsoft OS. Otherwise, what are the consequences if I replace Vista with XP Pro?
-
Well, by installing XP Pro, you're going to lose the advantage of the 64-bit version of Vista (ok, for the moment I'm not sure I've seen a difference), which handles the 8GB of RAM in the Acer without any issue. XP will only recognize 3GB (or maybe 4?). So at best, you're "losing" 4GB of RAM...
Otherwise, I think we should give a chance to Windows 7, which you can get for only €14.90 (ok, I owe you €1.10 ;-) )
I'm not sure you can install the 64-bit version of Seven if it doesn't detect a Vista Premium 64 system, but XP... You should wait another two little months...
And for die-hard XP Pro fans, you still have dual boot or virtual machines: VMware, Virtual PC, etc...
And if Windows is driving you crazy, MacOS is there to embrace you guys... But for €499, unless it’s used, don't expect to get a Mac..
As for our X3810, I managed to install a few complete games (Sims 2 + addons, Sims 3) and a few demos (the latest Batman, superb, Crysis, a Western fighting game, etc..), everything works perfectly, and it doesn't lag at all.. On Batman I'm at 1600x1280 resolution and it runs very well on the ATI 4650)
The only drawback that annoys me a bit about this machine is the noise of the hard drive.. I always feel like it doesn't stop spinning, even when I'm doing nothing (damn Windows services and other stuff running), and the Seagate is not exactly silent.. Unless I have ambient noise around, of course...
Have you also noticed this noise?
-
-
Yep!
Fozzy, did you manage to make your backup DVDs because I have the same issue!
I didn't have any DVDs when I turned it on and I stupidly plugged the computer into my box...
I haven't tried to make them anyway but I mainly installed Avast... I didn't think it would interfere with making these DVDs...
So what should I uninstall then, Avast and the updates only (what are they generally called??)
No problem on my side regarding noise but I've only had short uses (about 1 hour).
And regarding overheating, it seems normal to me... especially since it's getting really hot these days and my place isn't very ventilated... -
Matelot: Well yes, sometimes we rush...
I had already reinstalled without any applications or data, so no, I have
I will try to copy a Vista Home Premium CD from a friend; anyway, I have my own license. As for the drivers, I’ll download them from the Acer website and then starting from October 22, we should receive Seven.
Olive: The warranty sticker issue is a bit much (from Acer). I buy a tower unit, I should be able to change my graphics card, add a fan, or put my own hard drive, a TV card, fax... It's a PC after all!
That said, I hadn’t thought about reverting to an earlier version; I must say I was struggling for the last 15 days with my old machine which had a faulty power supply and a defective memory stick.
Regarding the noise, I who had a large tower with 3 drives and another fan, it’s like night and day. The x3810 is no noisier than my laptop (another Acer). -
Yep!
Thanks Fozzy, I burned the DVDs yesterday and there were no problems!
I used it for almost 5 hours (burning, downloading, surfing, and watching a movie) and there was no overheating, no noise, all good!
Quick question, when downloading Seven, will it require resetting the C/?
Indeed, it's a bit excessive for the label... -
Hey everyone, could someone please provide the name of the motherboard? I intend to buy this computer but I'm doing some research first and I haven't found any information on this point. For those who want to help but don't know how to, you can go to this address if needed:
https://www.touslesdrivers.com/index.php?v_page=29-
For akiratoriyama: It's an ACER motherboard with an AMI Bios. The Everest software provides the following information:
- Motherboard Manufacturer: Acer
- Motherboard Name: WG43M
- Motherboard Chipset: Intel Eaglelake G43
The memory is "Kingston"
For mat_elot: Well, unless the PC can send you music through thought transmission.. Unlike laptops, towers don't have speakers under the hood.- mat_elot : that wasn't the purpose of my message, in computing there are no silly questions. There was just a joke in my message.. gag.. lol... all that. No need to start off at a quarter turn like that.
As for towers with built-in speakers, I've never seen any, but well, the sound must not be great, it must really crackle and make the tower vibrate.. Hello lifespan of the components... Unless you stick something from a laptop that reminds you of the sound of AM radios from the 70s.
I had an Audigy 2 zs card (rated quite well) on my old setup, with my mid-range speakers, I don't see any difference with the sound from the Acer.
More angry? I'll buy you a little beer?
-
I'm a bit late to intervene on this forum, but I can provide you with some information:
The motherboard is a "DIG43L7 agreyhound".
Inside the PC, there is a PCIE 16x slot that is used by the graphics card.
There is also a free PCIE 1x slot.
The VGA output of the motherboard can be activated in the BIOS, in the "Advanced chipset features" section at the line
"Primary video". You have the choice between:
-Auto
-PCIE
-onboard VGA.
If you are on Auto and remove the PCIE card, the system switches to "Onboard VGA".
All this information can be found at the following address:
http://www.acersupport.com/acerpanam/manuals/acer/0000/servicemanuals/SG_ASX3810_ASX5810_0513.pdf
where you can download the "Service Guide".
The Service Guide is in English (easy to understand and well documented). You will find the disassembly instructions as well as the part references and the explanation of the BIOS.

A bit of a silly question maybe, but is there any way to have sound without speakers??
Because on my screen I don't have any speakers and yesterday I wanted to listen to some music and there was no sound at all! -
-
Knowing that I am potentially interested in this tower, I would like to know if it requires replacing or adding a quieter fan.
I must admit I was surprised by the price when I saw the specs of the thing. Indeed, €500 at Grosbill for a coreQuad, 750GB, 8GB, (a not so bad GPU).
Given the price, do I have a reason to worry about the hardware?
Best regards, Be Cool =)-
I think we're all asking the same question, and the problem is that the reviews for the same computer seem to be very different. On Darty, one says it doesn't overheat, while here, others say it does. One review claims it's noisy, but other comments say otherwise, so it's difficult.
I went to Auchan where the computers are on display and plugged in. I put my hand on the Acer, and it's true it's warm, but not hot. However, when I put my hand on an HP Slim of the same size but with a much better-ventilated case with holes all over the sides and on top, I must say the HP doesn't overheat. So, should I take my drill to make holes in the Acer???? lol -
In fact, I think the question isn't whether it gets hot or not, but whether it gets too hot to risk crashes or to prevent overclocking.
I only have a week of experience and I'm in Brittany, so I don't face extreme heat. However, I work on it 10 to 12 hours a day and despite a peak of 30°C during the day, I haven't had any problems. Of course, it depends on the usage you have.
Also, be careful not to place the right side against a desk, as it's the "ventilated" side of the case.
