You can still try to download the first update (SP1) of MS Office 2003: it might work if the installer finds an "acceptable" trace of MS Office 2003 on your PC.
Otherwise, you can contact Microsoft support and submit your problem to them: gather evidence of your good faith beforehand.
Be careful though, as it's not very appropriate to have "lent" your original CD to a friend. Put yourself in Microsoft's shoes: it looks very much like passive complicity in piracy.
