Conversion Bytes to MB Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,   10,000,000 Bytes = 1 MB? If so:  20,000,000 Bytes = 2 MB?   I need the Bytes for 2 MB, 5 MB, 10 MB!   Thank you in advance    --  Best regards Yoann166 :)

No, not at all.

1 byte = 1 octet = 8 bits

and 1 MB = 1,048,576 octets

except since 1998 where 1 MB = 1,000,000 octets and 1,048,576 octets must now be written as 1 MiB

1 MB is always 1,048,576 bytes.

It is only by simplification that we consider 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1 KB, etc.; because in other units of measurement, 1 kilo is equal to 1,000 units, for example grams.

However, manufacturers of storage media such as hard drives use the simplified method, so when they tell you 120 GB, you do not have 128,849,018,880 bytes, but rather 120,000,000,000, which is a loss of a little more than 8 GB.

Depending on what you want to do, you will need to choose between the two notations (exact or simplified).

Exact:
1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes
2 MB = 2,097,152 bytes
5 MB = 5,242,880 bytes
10 MB = 10,485,760 bytes

Simplified:
1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes
2 MB = 2,000,000 bytes
5 MB = 5,000,000 bytes
10 MB = 10,000,000 bytes

Yes.
If it's for an upload script, I would personally choose a straightforward notation.
To simplify, you can understand it as general, because as I told you, it is to avoid misunderstandings when learning the basics (I did it in a vocational diploma).
Indeed, when we see 1,000 meters, that equals 1 kilometer.
The only exception to this rule is for bytes.
