Square instead of a sign, symbol why?

Hello, when I am on MSN and I want to create drawings and symbols with the heart suit and everything, it shows me a blank square, and sometimes it does this on websites too. What can I do to prevent this from happening? Thanks.

        Damn... I'm not the sender of the message and there could be thousands of possible symbols. Damn.

        Damn, the question was the meaning of the square, not the symbol behind it. And damn again, it's impossible to know which symbol is behind... it's really a shame.
