Live CDs don't like me

Hello,
for a while now I've been trying out Linux with live CDs, but my Dell won't boot them; they all freeze before the desktop appears, except for the Slack-based live CDs like Slax or Alix. The others, such as Ubuntu, SuSE, and Mandriva, don't work; SuSE reboots to XP, and the others freeze or indicate a problem with pcmcia-cs (Mandriva). I'd like to understand why, even though Slax is quite nice, it would be good to be able to compare.
Thanks to everyone
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.11

    Hello,

Most LiveCDs have the option to pass parameters to the kernel before booting, such as not detecting certain devices, and this is the case for PCMCIA with an option like "nopcmcia".

For laptops, options such as "acpi=off" or "nolapic nolapic" are quite common.

These options are available via the "F1" to "F8" keys...

OK, thanks, I will try that right away, so I will try F1 etc. to find a console.

Not a console, but help and examples of commands to pass to the kernel.

Good, Mandriva isn't working, the CD-RAM in fact (probably a problem with the burner or a corrupted file, right?) I'm trying with Suse.

    Hello,

Did you check the integrity of your image "iso" by comparing its MD5 checksum before burning it?

How did you burn your CD?
Which burning software did you use?

See the FAQ on CCM for the article on this topic

Yes, I checked, I burned it to ISO with CD Burner Pro
it's a CDRW, it might be because of that, right? After burning and re-burning so many times?

Surely, booting from CD-RWs that have been used many times often fails (personal experience) ;-))

Okay, I won't insist then, I will buy a good and large stack of blank CDs, but on the other hand, it doesn't explain why even with a CD-RW the Slax versions work just fine

when you disconnect APCI with a live CD, does it restart afterwards with XP?

When you boot up with a live CD, does it restart afterward with XP?
Well, actually we don't disconnect it, we prevent it from being loaded by the Linux kernel, so after rebooting, no problema ;-))

Thank you for your help. I'm going to try a few more times and then I'll stop.
Initially, I was looking for a lightweight distro for my son to emulate an arcade machine, but I ended up getting interested in this penguin world, so I'm looking into it while thinking about removing XP later on. Now, I still need to figure out how to download XMAME and install it on Linux, and that's not easy.

after finding out how to download x mame and install it on linux, it's not won
      It's provided natively under GNU/Linux ;-))

      On a Mandriva :
[tmpfs]$ urpmq -f mame no package named mame The following packages contain mame: gxmame kxmame qmamecat xmame-SDL xmame-base xmame-tools xmame-x11 [tmpfs]$ urpmq -fS {g,k}xmame kxmame: A KDE front-end for xmame (1.91-0.1.20060plf) gxmame: A Gtk+ front-end for xmame (0.35-0.cvs050410.2plf) [tmpfs]$ urpmq -fi xmame-x11 Name: xmame-x11 Version: 0.106 Release: 1.1.20060plf Group: Emulators Size: 71340219 Architecture: i586 Source RPM: xmame-0.106-1.1.20060plf.src.rpm Build Host: littletux Packager: Guillaume Bedot <littletux@zarb.org> URL: http://x.mame.net/ Summary: X-Mame Arcade Game Emulator compiled for x11 Description: X-Mame the UNIX/X11 port of Mame project. It makes Mame arcade emulator available on *ix machines using the X11R6 X-Window system (and Linux ones using SVGAlib too). Mame is a virtual machine emulator: it includes a Z80, 6502, 68000 and lastly I86 uP emulators, joined to several arcade machine hardware emulators. Each arcade emulator contains a full description about hardware, mem maps, video, sounds and so, making possible that if you have original ROM images of a supported arcade game, you can play the game. This version has been compiled with X11/Open GL/Glide support. A separate binary without the 68000 asm core is provided in a separate binary (xmame.x11). Try it if your game does not work well. If using dga you end up with a messed-up screen, check that XF86Config-4 has 'Load "extmod"' in the module section. This package is in PLF because of Mandriva Linux policy forbidding non-free and emulation software.
