Mp3 ---> virus ...

Hi,

An MP3 file cannot carry a virus unless it has been modified to something like .mp3.exe. But an audio file cannot contain a virus. That's why it's important to always enable the option to show file extensions.

An mp3 file, as well as any other audio file, cannot contain a virus.

Indeed, some programs allow you to include both the mp3 file and the player in the same file.
Advantage: you can play the mp3 without any software installed because everything is in the same file.

Disadvantage: the file is no longer an mp3 but an executable, so a virus is possible.

In any case, mp3+exe files are not very common because

I don't know if .MP3 files can transmit viruses, but I can tell you that Kazaa and similar sites are spreading viruses these days! (the most common being Benjamin)

In one of your other threads, the one where I was talking to you about spyware, I suspected you were a fan of peer-to-peer sites!

WARNING! Kazaa and similar sites = spyware + viruses!

If .MP3 files were carriers of viruses, burning your .MP3s would certainly transmit the virus in question!

I don’t use Kazaa (I definitely prefer Audiogalaxy), and I was one of the first to warn my friends about the Benjamin virus.
I also have a whole list of spywares that I’d gladly send you if you want (and it’s not just peer-to-peer logs).

I asked this question just to know, is it theoretically possible for an mp3 to transmit a virus?

Lastly, when I mentioned burning, I meant the mp3s that we burn to audio format so that we can also listen to them on a stereo.

Audio Galaxy is no better than Kazaa when it comes to spyware!
I completely agree that spywares are not exclusive to peer-to-peer but many, many free services!

If your .MP3 is no longer an MP3 but an audio file, then it doesn't contain a virus! (you did mention audio CDs, but I didn't catch on)

Attention, I just caught a virus on a homepage for mp3s. I don't know which site it was because I had too many pop-ups, but it was one of those pop-ups, for sure!!!!! Webmasters could at least check their ads!!! Damn, I don't find this funny, I wouldn't wish this on you!

You can't do much except alert the webmaster! I hope you have good antivirus software. It's Java code that's often embedded in a pop-up. Run a scan to make sure you didn't catch anything...

MarsuGL is right, a virus can be in the tag, the header, but not in the mp3 itself.

Hello everyone. I was infected by Klez and downloaded an antivirus against Klez from Symantec via a message from CCM. But I've been told that it might not be completely reliable. This surprises me given the professionalism of the CCM webmaster. That said, I would like to get an opinion regarding this virus and others as well. I must say that I do quite a bit of P2P but only in MP3, except for 2 days ago when I “got” a clip. Could that have contributed to my infection? Everything has been back to normal since, but who knows. Could you ease my concerns about the effectiveness of the Symantec Klez antivirus and also recommend some good antivirus programs because even Norton has its flaws? I don't know what to think anymore. A big thank you in advance.

I don't know this "klez", but in my opinion, all antivirus programs are on par when it comes to virus definition updates.
As for disinfection, the code used by some viruses often makes it impossible to disinfect and recover the original file. I use Norton, and I've never had any problems.
And I don't know about other brands, but the heuristic mode is a bit paranoid (false alerts).
