Why is the download speed on STEAM so slow? Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,
I just bought Lost Planet, and now I need to download it on Steam. At first, it tells me it will take 8 hours at 250kb, but I’m only getting a maximum of 12.5kb!!! If it keeps going like this, I’ll have it in 20 years and it’s really frustrating!
So if you can help me with this issue, thank you!Configuration: Windows Vista

Hi there and everyone else, I think a lot of people have this problem and I just found the solution myself.

So I bought Left 4 Dead, downloading at 40 to 60 kb/s and after 30% I was fed up and found this:

Log out of Steam (disconnect)
Delete a small blob file in C:/Program Files/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob and then restart Steam, normally it will ask for your password again and do some updates, then check the download page and BAM 1.4Mb/s Oo.

So I recommend this option, by the time I found this forum and posted, I had only done 15%. But I still went down, I was up to 1.5Mb/s and now I'm at 1.1Mb/s which is still quite reasonable (I also disabled my firewall during the download).

So to all those who've come across this topic without an answer, try this!
(There's no risk, the .blob file regenerates when you reconnect.)

In fact, I tried the method, and it worked for me, but I believe this manipulation only changes the download region of Steam, placing it (for me) on Japan.
I switched it back to France and I was back to 30k/sec, I switched it to Japan again and I went back up to 400k/sec.

Indeed yes, I had the same problem. Downloading at 40kb/s which was poor.

I deleted the Client.blop file from the folder, redid the update of the Steam platform and switched the download region to Japan; as a result, I went from 40kb/s to 250kb/s.

I had to download the update for Dawn of War 2, and it was downloading at 3KB/s, so yeah...  Actually, I switched to the Benelux server, and now it's full speed. The French server must be crap.  To do this, you need to go to settings and downloads, change the server, and then Steam restarts.

I confirm the following steps:

Go to "settings" (at the bottom of the "my games" page).
Select "download"
In this window, you will see: "download region" (it will most likely say "France")
Replace this country with "Japan"
Steam will ask you to restart, accept
There you go, for me the download speed went from 23KB/S for Empire Total War to an average of 230 ;)

Well, I did a test and since I'm used to this site, here's a little recap:

You have two methods to speed up Steam!

- Close Steam (including stopping the process "steam.exe * 32"). To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, you'll get to a Windows startup page, click on OPEN TASK MANAGER... then go to PROCESSES, find steam.exe and click on END PROCESS at the bottom of the window)
Next, you can delete the files "steamclient.dll" and "ClientRegistry.blob" from the Steam software folder = by default: C:/Program Files/Steam/
Restart Steam and it will relaunch doing some updates (it replaces the deleted files).

- Once in the software, click at the bottom on SETTINGS (at the bottom of the "My Games" page).
Click on DOWNLOADS
On this window, you will see "download region" written (it will probably say "France")
Replace this country with "Japan"
Steam will ask you to restart, accept it while stopping the steam.exe process (follow the instructions above) OR restart your computer.
Restart the software and there... miracle, my download speed went from 25-30kb/s to 500-800kb/s.

As a diligent gamer, I had carefully followed the Steam Download settings, choosing: France - 1MB/s
Result: 40k/s

...
I had logically tried after a few months (sic) to change to Italy/Switzerland since they are my neighbors.
Result: 50K/s

Finally, I read this post and tried Japan: 250K/s!
Then US-NY: 400k/s!!
And finally Benelux-fiber optic: 900k/s!!!

If anyone has an explanation, I’m all ears ;)

It works, no kidding! The trick is to go to the "Steam" tab, then from the dropdown list choose "settings". Next, click on the "Downloads" tab and finally click on the dropdown list "Download region" and choose either "Canada-Toronto" or "US-New York"... Steam will restart and the download speed will be much faster! I went from 25kb/s to 550kb/s with "US-New York" =D

It's not working for me either, in both cases... and I've tried plenty of different regions (Japan, US, UK, Germany, Taiwan, Belgium...). Nothing works. My average speed doesn't change and even decreases in some cases: 120kb/s.  Let's just say that everyone who has 1Mb/s or more makes me dream...   Is it due to something in particular (busy servers, under "maintenance"...)?

It's not complicated....

-1st You disconnect from Steam
-2nd You go to the Steam installation folder
-3rd You delete clientregistry.blob (I think that's what it's called)
-4th You reconnect to Steam (normally there is an update) and then check the download
/-5th If the download is still just as long.... the game may simply not be uploaded enough

Indeed, I am Belgian and I decided to install Left For Dead 2. I had an average speed of 250kb/. It was showing me 9 to 12 hours of downloading. I got tired of it, I switched to France and dropped to 15kb/s. I changed again to Japan where I had 120 kb/s. Same for Switzerland and London. In the end, I upgraded my ADSL to fiber-optic cable and switched from London to the USA - New York.  Since then, I'm struggling less and I'm uploading at 450 kb/s. That works for me but I would be happy if I had at least 600 to 800 kb/s.  Peace *-* -- Silence is golden.

Personally, I tested 5 different locations (recognized as having the highest global speeds) and the result is:
- Switzerland: 400kb/s
- Belgium: 500-600kb/s
- Japan: 10-50kb/s (weird, I know)
- NYC, USA: 70-150kb/s
And the maximum in the Netherlands with between 1000 and 1500kb/s
(By the way, I have a pretty weak connection)

Hello, After many purchases of games called "Steam" and browsing the net, I found some answers to my questions:  1/ Why aren't downloads working or why are they too slow? 2/ Why does restarting Steam delete local files, etc.? And the last, most important one: Why buy CD or DVD media if you have to download?  However, there is this faster way to enjoy your purchased game...  1/ Completely close Steam 2/ Press Win + R 3/ Enter cmd.exe in the field and then click Run 4/ In the console type "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -Install (Letter of your DVD drive)  Well done, you will have installed your Steam games without downloading! (Note that you will need to disable automatic updates for the games beforehand) Let it finish the authentication downloads.  AND FINALLY, PLAY!!!
