Hello,
I am currently looking for the name of a disaster movie about a worldwide nuclear war. I seem to remember that it was between the Americans and the Japanese, but I'm not sure...
However, I do recall quite a bit of the story. In fact, after this war, only Australia is not yet contaminated by the gigantic nuclear cloud that engulfs the planet. A US nuclear submarine with the last American military survivors on board arrives in Australia. They are not well received by the population, as they are considered responsible for this catastrophe. One day, they receive a radio communication from the US that is regularly repeating something like "keep hope, the whales are still alive" coming from Australia. So they set sail again, navigating deep enough to escape the radiation from the atmosphere, but once they reach the location and land in suits, they realize that every day, the sun shines on the sensor of a computer, which then activates and plays an old message from a reporter when the world was still populated.
The film ends with a couple and their child committing suicide in their home by the Australian coast, consuming a substance distributed by the government when the first symptoms of contamination appear (vomiting, etc.)...
Basically, it’s a disaster film like no other...
Thank you for any help you can provide!

Good evening, here are two versions of this story
the first one is "The Last Shore" by Stanley Kramer with actors Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, a film from 1960
the second one is a two-part TV movie that has already aired twice on M6 "USS Charleston: Last Chance for Humanity"
director Russell Mulcahy with Armand Assante, Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown
personally, I prefer the 1960 version, darker, gloomier, more fatalistic. Although Russell Mulcahy's version is watchable. There you go, I hope this meets your expectations. Bye, see you later.

September 1, 2012. NATO is dissolved after a deep internal crisis between Germany and Turkey on one side, and France and the USA on the other.
September 5, 2012. The State of Palestine is recognized by Russia, Iran, China, and a few Arab countries. The Arab League is dissolved. Israel threatens to strike Palestine and the Arab countries.
September 8, 2012. An unprecedented wave of suicide bombings hits Tel Aviv, Paris, London, and Los Angeles. Hezbollah claims responsibility for all of them.
September 9, 2012. After numerous warnings, the Israeli army secretly launches 12 heavily armed bombers carrying bunker-buster bombs towards Iran to destroy its entire nuclear program. Flying at very low altitudes, they evade all radars on their way, but 6 are shot down over Iran, which has just revealed its newly operational Russian S-300s. The other planes manage to dodge the missiles and destroy the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the south of the country, causing a radioactive leak that kills 10,000 people instantly. The response is swift.
September 10, 2012 - 3:15 AM. The Iranian President orders a general mobilization. 16 Shehab-3 missiles are launched at US bases in Iraq and 9 in Saudi Arabia, resulting in a total of 451 soldier deaths, with 40% of the missiles intercepted by deployed Patriot batteries. Hezbollah takes advantage of this panic to conduct an incursion into Israeli territory and manages to strike hard at the IDF, killing 26 Israeli soldiers and capturing 16, 9 of whom are executed live on Hezbollah TV.
6:30 AM. The US Congress, convened in an urgent session, authorizes the President to use nuclear weapons against Iran in order to exploit the conflict to invade it.
6:45 AM. Fearing an imminent attack from Arab countries, Israel launches a preemptive strike on Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, destroying strategic bases. However, the attack does not achieve its intended objective as Syria secretly possesses Russian S-300 anti-aircraft systems. The American President then accuses Russia of complicity and threatens nuclear war.
7:00 AM. China claims it intends to restore constitutional order by annexing Taiwan and threatens nuclear retaliation against any intruders.
7:10 AM. The North Korean army declares itself ready to annex South Korea and threatens nuclear retaliation on American and Japanese soil. Japan is on alert level 4.
7:20 AM. All nuclear weapons on the planet are deployed.
7:25 AM. The Egyptian President is the victim of a suicide bombing by Islamists in his palace for having had relations with Israel. Radicals take power and want to wipe Israel off the map. 600,000 soldiers are mobilized.
7:30 AM. The Iranian Revolutionary Army blocks the Strait of Hormuz, torpedoing 4 European ships.
8:00 AM. A spectacular first wave of 340 missiles coordinated by 5 countries including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Hezbollah strikes the Israeli capital, destroying 75% of strategic infrastructures. This attack results in 65,000 civilian and military deaths. The Jewish people are annihilated.
In retaliation, Israel pulverizes Jordan with 5 nuclear missiles, resulting in 5 million deaths.
8:30 AM. The world knows that nuclear weapons have just been used. Europeans do not condemn Israel's act. Russia threatens the USA again.
8:45 AM. In retaliation for the attacks on their bases, the USA launches 500 chemical missiles at Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. The Iranian capital is devastated, resulting in 4 million deaths.
9:00 AM. Kim Jong-un orders the attack on Seoul. 150 missiles ravage the South Korean peninsula, resulting in 5 million deaths. The American army retaliates with 15 bombers. However, 11 are shot down by Russian S-400 batteries and US military bases in South Korea are destroyed by 75% with the help of Russian strategic forces. The USA then declares war on Russia.
The whole world holds its breath.
9:15 AM. The European Union claims to be neutral but secretly prepares to land in Moscow.
9:20 AM. Iran declares it possesses nuclear weapons and launches 18 Shahab-3 missiles that will destroy all of Israel.
9:25 AM. The USA launches 160 nuclear missiles. 100 are intercepted, but the rest will obliterate Iran, Syria, and Southern Lebanon.
9:40 AM. Pakistan takes advantage of the situation and launches 96 nuclear missiles at India, which retaliates by launching 211 hydrogen bombs, resulting in 45 million Pakistani casualties and the annihilation of major cities.
11:15 AM. A Chinese landing on the rebellious island of Taiwan is fiercely repelled with heavy losses. China issues an ultimatum to the USA that a nuclear attack is imminent.
1:50 PM. In perfect synchronization, China, Russia, and North Korea launch a total of 3,550 nuclear missiles of 3,000 megatons at the United States, Japan, and Europe. 30% will be intercepted, but the toll is indescribable. Washington is devastated, New York is wiped off the map, Chicago is pulverized, 60% of military bases are destroyed... 59 million deaths. In Europe, Paris, London, and Brussels are pulverized with 32 million deaths. Japan is destroyed by 65% with 35 million casualties.
2:10 PM. The American response is weak due to the effect of the first allied strike: Pyongyang, Shanghai, and Saint Petersburg are destroyed. Moscow and Beijing remain intact due to 2,000 deployed S-400 batteries and 1,200 S-500s, along with an unprecedented cyber attack on US military servers by China, paralyzing the Pentagon's infrastructure and NORAD. The USA then loses all control of its missiles.
2:30 PM. Allies threaten the USA with a second strike if they do not sign an unconditional surrender.
3:35 PM. A second batch of 1,000 missiles from the allies flies toward their targets on American soil.
3:40 PM. An American response is controlled, and 9 US submarines are disabled by the GLONASS system and destroyed; NORAD bases are annihilated. The White House is reduced to dust along with Congress and the Pentagon. The USA realizes their defeat but resists against humiliation.
3:50 PM. Over 420 missiles strike their targets, and it is the end of the United States if the rest were to fall as everything would be over.
4:58 PM. The USA accepts unconditional surrender, and the war comes to an end, with the remaining missiles being self-destructed.

Sorry, but if it takes indeed a few dozen minutes to launch an ICBM, pre-planning a simple long-range bombing raid requires several hours (8 hours of preparation for a simple reconnaissance mission by an RF-4 Phantom, as still operated by the Japanese, Germans, and Turks), and especially coordinating strikes from various countries while their governments are falling like flies takes days (just to deploy the coalition forces in 1991, it took 4 to 5 days to gather forces from around thirty countries).
Hello,
Thank you so much, Attila, that's exactly it!! What a relief!
Thanks again!!! This movie is not only well made but also offers a good dose of lessons!!! I recommend it.
Bye!

you are absolutely right especially about the futility of certain things but which version do you prefer?
Sure thing!
Well, for now I've only seen the recent version, but as soon as I've watched the other one, I'll let you know! ;)

Too good, this film, true for the dark inclination of the 60's version... but both are really captivating!
Good evening
I believe that this is no longer the same way of filming. The first one is more intellectual, more militant, more engaged.
The second is more of a TV movie, aimed at the general public. I agree that this does not take away from its quality. But I prefer the first one.
I'll leave you with my thoughts; if you want more movie recommendations, feel free to ask. I'm always ready to help. Bye, see you soon.

By the way, speaking of nuclear war, I hope that’s not what’s going to happen with Russia and Georgia, because I believe Georgia does have nuclear weapons... since it was a former Soviet country and it seems that when it broke apart, they couldn’t take everything out of the country (Georgia...)....
Otherwise, I’ve already seen the movie (the one from the 60s) and I thought it was pretty good :)

No, Georgia does not have nuclear weapons. In any case, it cannot compete with the Russians. The Americans are making them lie down, and as for the Europeans, let's not even talk about it. Putin's goal is to try to reclaim the remnants of their former republics. Their backyard, just like the Americans have theirs in Central and South America. On top of that, you add oil to the mix, which they exploit and especially evacuate (Caspian Sea). Just imagine the picture: these poor Georgians are not close to joining NATO.
To make matters worse, the Winter Games will be organized in 2014 in Sochi, a charming town at the foot of the Caucasus. I know 2014 is far away, but still. This Caucasus is a real powder keg.
Good reflection to all and see you later.
P.S. : excuse the mistakes.

The movie you're looking for is "USS Charleston: Last Chance for Humanity." I liked it too, but it's not a war between Japan and the USA, it's the Chinese versus the USA! See you soon!
.. "The Last Beach" ... ( The novel is worth reading otherwise .. ( after having found it of course .. )) .
Hello,
It's a TV movie that aired on M6, I can't remember the name, there was also another TV movie that aired on M6 about the crew of a B52 called The Day of Apocalypse, also aired on M6.
There's a movie called The Day After made in 1983 about a full-scale war where you see Kansas City destroyed and everything else.

One of the saddest films I have ever seen!
that deeply affected me, as it is so moving
and heartbreaking!
