Climate change is leading to more fires, particularly in France during the summer of 2026, despite the scientists’ numerous warnings. To address this situation, various smartphone apps can be used to stay informed and receive real-time alerts. Among them are Google Maps, which offers a special feature to track the evolution of forest fires, and Météo-France, which assesses the danger level for starting and spreading fires in each metropolitan department. However, it remains crucial to act to limit the impact of climate change. And you, what measures do you recommend to address this increasingly worrying situation?

    Hello,

    My wife and I went this weekend to help in the Landes; it was a real disaster.

    The fire spreads quickly, and the wind greatly contributes to this unfortunate propagation.

    The smoke is very, very strong and quickly suffocates as well.

    We returned this morning, exhausted.

    Whether or not there is an app, FR-Alert warns when needed on all smartphones in a concerned area, but does not prevent curious onlookers from coming to revel in the misery of others when there is no cordon of gendarmerie.

    Not to mention of course these same gendarmes coming to tell people to evacuate.

    Apart from the arsonists, preventive measures at the individual level are not numerous and are not followed: clearing gardens, avoiding the use of machinery, not throwing cigarette butts or even smoking in the forest, barbecues, maintaining one’s car.

    Nevertheless, in recent days there have been detentions of the leaders involved.

    The collective plan is more complex; regarding the Landes and Gironde disaster, administrative inertia meant that Enedis did not have its prohibition to clear vegetation near its high-voltage lines and did not have the common sense to refrain from doing so itself.

    To a lesser degree, even if some people lost everything, we do not know the origin of the Var fire which is considered “accidental,” but what is certainly known is that at least 90% of fires are human-made.

    The situation is worsened concerning Landes and Gironde because it is large-scale monoculture of a highly inflammable species (pine) without diversification or pre-planned non-wooded spaces or firebreaks of sufficient width, whereas unlike Var, this forest has a commercial purpose, but it will be more difficult after the disaster ends to implement these preventive measures in the long term and they should have been in place for years, but human stupidity cannot be prevented.
