It is false to say that an electric car pollutes less than a combustion car, except in France; in some countries, the production of the electricity charged in the battery pollutes much more than the combustion engine. On the other hand, there is also air and water pollution and the destruction of the planet during the extraction of lithium, cadmium, etc. Moreover, for now, we do not know what will happen to the batteries. As for the energy consumption, the nearly doubled weight of an electric car is enormous, and this is while energy savings are being preached.

you seem to forget that the efficiency of an internal combustion engine is around 30%, at best 40, compared to 90% for an electric motor.
Against that, transporting an additional battery is really negligible in not too sporty driving.
When you take an electric bike, you don’t complain about the weight of the battery compared to the savings on your calves.
Have you ever wondered why subways, trams, and trains prefer electricity wherever they can?

I am less critical than you, the B5 is already using direct injection with a catalyst. The mechanisms added in the following Euro standards have no impact on pollution in this specific case of use, on highways at controlled speed, where diesel has the lowest immediate pollution in its category.

... but less relevant here, for once a diesel is used for what it does best :-D
I maintain that for such long-distance uses, a car like this Passat B5 has nothing to envy from an electric one, comfort-wise. It has more than compensated for its manufacturing cost and its consumption (admittedly extreme here but let's say 5l and that's already a lot) is low enough to postpone even more the moment when its potential electric replacement will also have to balance its own carbon debt. Independently of the cost it has imposed on the metal market for which many other uses could have been allowed with such a quantity consumed.
I had done the exercise with my Fiesta 1.4 TDCI, 32l for 930km. Otherwise, 4.2l/100 was its average with rare extremes at 6.1l/100 in VERY spirited driving. Obviously replaced (used gasoline) when I was no longer doing as many long trips and this same gasoline was resold in better condition than when purchased. It was "7.8l average over 2 months" at best but with 3x the power ^^ and unless my buyer crashed it, it's still running.What I call circular ecology; applicable to electric vehicles, of course. But I'm getting there.
Last point that is often overlooked, talking about "switching to electric" has become "taking leases and other 'purchase options never purchased'" and it is no longer a matter of "lifespan" on a 24/48 month contract in a world where the industrialization of battery recycling is still in prototype stage. Unfortunately and logically given their structure.
Those who aim (and succeed) to keep their electric vehicle for more than 10 years and over 200,000km have legitimacy to defend their choice from an ecological point of view. This goes for anyone who only drives second-hand electric cars, purchased, regardless of the mileage or year.
These remain alternatives and not solutions. I haven't even touched on the topic of the weight and consumption/pollution of tires since the debate can only be infinite as long as there are parameters to add and differing use cases.

What about the battery's performance itself and its charging?
What about the cost of charging infrastructure?
What about the concept of "rails"?

Bad example, with an average of 27 km/h on a regular bike, electric bikes only pass me uphill before getting overtaken without being seen again. And even then, what about insurance for motorized vs. regular, the risk of battery explosion, forgetting to charge, the glaring issues of premature motor failures... if despite 8000 km a year I don't switch, there are reasons ;-)

My criticism was implied. "What happens to cars at the end of their leasing period," returned to the used car market? To end their life in a parking lot? Exported abroad? All three in different proportions?
Lacking figures, I cannot quantify but only question. At least, an electric car in circulation fulfills its role of replacing a gasoline one.
And I cannot tell someone who maintains their gasoline car in proper working condition that it is more ecological to replace it with an electric one.
