Hello,
I cleaned my JBL earbuds a few days ago by removing the deposits from the holes and the grille with a needle, as I usually do.
But this time, my earbuds haven't been working properly since.
I feel like the noise-cancelling mode change has no effect anymore. I can still hear the little beep indicating that I'm changing modes by touching the left earbud, but the sound of my media is terrible (not the beep, which hasn't changed). And there's no difference between noise-cancelling/no noise-cancelling.
In fact, there's hardly any difference whether I have the earbud in my ear or not... Ambient noises come through just fine.
As for music and videos, the sound has become mediocre. The bass is almost nonexistent, as if I were listening through an old phone speaker from the 2000s. I've temporarily fixed this problem by creating a new equalizer where the bass is cranked up and the other frequencies are more subdued, and that works, but it's hard to enjoy it without the noise-cancelling feature.
I also reset the factory settings via the JBL app, but it feels like it did nothing; my earbuds reconnected immediately and my custom equalizer was still there.
Do you know what might have happened? How can I save my earbuds?

Behind these grilles, more than just vents, lie among other things the few microphones responsible for capturing the ambient sound before the audio processing sends its negative audio to the main transducers.
These microphones are not MEMS; there is indeed a very thin membrane designed to capture pressure waves.
A needle piercing the membrane of one or several of these microphones renders them inoperable. Furthermore, nothing indicates that the audio processing unit is able to handle sound cancellation properly with one or more faulty microphones. Clearly, this is not the case at all.
Also note that these microphones are not sold separately. In your misfortune, this is not the most expensive headset in its segment. You only have to replace the headset. Look towards the refurbished market; I got my Bose HP 700 with its complete bundle, guaranteed for 1 year in consignment for €150. Depending on your budget and preferences, you will surely also find something to your liking there.
And above all - for you - don’t do that anymore! You think you’re doing it right; it’s "cleaner," but here are the damages. It’s better to completely disassemble the headset and clean it from the inside; to be done each time you replace the ear pads, for example.
