English film, 2 gay men adopt a gay teenager

Solved

Hello,

I have been searching for a long time for the title of this film from several decades ago: it features a couple of gay men. One of them works in a nightclub with a drag act. They adopt a gay teenager and this unconventional family functions well. Until the moment when the teenager is lynched in the street by homophobes.

It's impossible for me to remember the title, nor even the name of the teenager who is a well-known actor.

Thank you in advance for your help! :-)

  1. Good morning / good evening, Annie.

I'm trying - without conviction because I have never seen the film and I just stumbled upon it during my research and it actually interests me - with My Two Daddies featuring the spectacular Alan CUMMING in the role of the drag queen who is in a relationship with a man but passes him off as his cousin at the time of adopting the teenager with Down syndrome.

Here is the link to the trailer to confirm my claims: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diVr0UXTjUU

PS: The name of the actor playing the role of the teenager is Isaac LEYVA.

I hope I could help you,

I wish you a pleasant day / evening.

    Sincerely,

    PN.

    1. I'll complete myself then...

In the same vein, you have:

      - The Joys of Family (comedy-oriented): A gay couple trying to adopt a child. In vain. They end up accepting the first person who comes along, a homophobic 15-year-old teenager with a criminal past.

      - Hidden Kisses (drama - romance-oriented): A heterosexual couple discovers that their son is kissing a boy. The latter accepts his sexual orientation, unlike the friend he kissed who is already in a relationship with a girl. He becomes the laughingstock of his classmates but remains true to himself.

  2. Hello Pluto_Nium,

Thank you very much for your movie suggestions that I don't actually know and that seem interesting. Unfortunately, the one I'm looking for is not among them. It's still an excellent film, very moving.

I'm frustrated with my failing memory for not being able to recall the title. I've searched for it several times on Google, and recently I even reached out to ChatGPT! To no avail... :-(

    1. Well, I'm freaking out!! At least 4 times I've posted a message that doesn't show up, with all the HTML code appearing when I submit it, but the message remains invisible when I refresh the page. However, they are counted in the number of messages. Grrr!

Anyway. I suddenly remembered the name of the famous actor (Matthew Broderick) and on that occasion, I realized that my memory is really playing tricks on me: it's not him who plays the role of the teenager and it's an American film!

Anyway. As a result, I was able to easily find the title: Torch Song Trilogy. All I have to do now is find it online, which doesn't seem promising since it dates back to 1988: I really loved it and I would love to see it again...

PS: I think I've figured out the source of the bugs. I tried to copy-paste the summary made by ChatGPT and it seems that it's not compatible with CCM! So to see this summary, just ask it directly.

      1. Last attempt:

"Torch Song Trilogy" is a 1988 American film directed by Paul Bogart, based on the play of the same name written by Harvey Fierstein.

The story takes place in New York during the 1970s and 1980s and follows the experiences of Arnold Beckoff (played by Harvey Fierstein himself), a drag queen and gay comedian. The film is divided into three distinct parts, each representing an act of the original play.

In the first act, titled "International Stud," Arnold seeks love and meaningful relationships. He embarks on a tumultuous relationship with Ed (Brian Kerwin), a bisexual man who is questioning himself. Their relationship is marked by ups and downs, and Arnold struggles to find a balance between his desire for emotional connection and his need for independence.

In the second act, titled "Fugue in a Nursery," Arnold is in a serious relationship with Alan (Matthew Broderick), a young student. Their relationship is tested when Alan has to confront his family's homophobia and his own doubts about his identity and life choices.

The third act, titled "Widows and Children First!," takes place a few years later. Arnold becomes a father by adopting a rebellious young gay man named David (Eddie Castrodad). Arnold must juggle his role as a father with his ongoing need to find love and acceptance in a society that does not facilitate homosexual relationships.

"Torch Song Trilogy" is an emotional and sincere film that addresses themes such as love, family, sexual identity, the quest for happiness, and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in society. It offers an authentic and touching representation of the experiences and struggles of the gay community during that time.

Phew! Attempt successful, but it took some cleverness to manage to remove the code that was preventing display here!
