My mouse cursor slows down, stops, and then starts again.

Solved

Hello,

Here’s the problem: when I use a mouse, everything works normally for a few seconds, then the cursor gradually slows down before completely stopping. After about ten seconds, the cursor moves again. During this "stop" period, the mouse buttons still work.

At first, I thought it was a failure of my mouse, so I bought another one which worked for 2 weeks, and then the bug started again, and so on with 4 different mice!

My drivers are up to date and my scans show no viruses. I tried uninstalling my mouse but it didn’t change anything, and on other PCs, it works normally. Do you have a solution or any leads?

Thanks in advance!

    Hello.

This may come from a process that starts and slows down your PC. To get an overview of your PC, do the following:

Download FRST. Once downloaded, save it on the desktop. Then, right-click on FRST and choose Run as administrator and you will see this:

    Click on Scan

Note: wait for the messages indicating that the scan is complete to be displayed.

At the end of the scan, you will have two text files on the desktop: FRST and Addition.

Then send the FRST and ADDITION reports to PJJOINT. See THIS TUTORIAL, then provide the two links generated by PJJOINT in your reply.

    1. Small addition,

I forgot to mention, it only happens with the mouse, the touchpad has no slowdown or bug like that.

When the mouse stops, the sensor light starts to blink rapidly, like the diode on the PC when it's charging. It happens with several different brands, both wired and wireless.

It's no surprise that your PC is crashing; you have two antivirus programs, AVG and McAfee. You should never have multiple antivirus programs on a PC, as this can cause bugs that may lead to the PC freezing.

You're using Windows 10, so you don't need an antivirus; there's already one built into Windows, and it is sufficient. It automatically takes over as soon as no other antivirus is installed on the PC.

So, you should keep only one antivirus, either AVG or McAfee, or uninstall both and just keep the Windows antivirus.

If you want to uninstall AVG free antivirus, uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller. I've included the Revo Uninstaller tutorial at the end of the message. Be careful to uninstall it properly with Revo Uninstaller; otherwise, it won't uninstall completely.

If you want to uninstall McAfee LiveSafe, do it with this McAfee tool.

Uninstall WebAdvisor by McAfee as it's unnecessary adware.

Your version of Windows 10 is not up to date. To check, go to Windows Update; the update to version 22H2 should be proposed. If not, go to this page, click on Update Now, which will start downloading the Microsoft tool. You just need to open it, and it will allow you to update Windows 10 to the latest version and let you know if it is compatible with your PC. Note that this update takes some time.

Tutorial Revo Uninstaller to read carefully.

Accept the uninstallation of the program you wish to uninstall, and if there is an error message saying that uninstallation is not possible, close the error message and continue the procedure.

Check "Advanced Scan" and then click on "Scan".

Click on "Select all" and then on "Delete". If a second list appears, do the same, and once everything is deleted, click on "Finish". A restart may be requested.

Oh! Thanks for McAfee. It was originally on the PC and I never managed to remove it...

I'm still going to keep AVG, but I'll remove the rest as you advised, I'll get back to you once that's done!

That said, the bug is from before the last update... The first time was in October, and since then it's been regular as I mentioned in my first message, it happened with 4 different mice. I've also had AVG since after the first bug, so we'll see what happens next.

So it was quite quick in the end. Windows updated, McAfee removed, the bug is still there...

But thank you for helping me remove McAfee! I was tired of seeing its pop-up at every startup!

Remove AVG and let me know if it's better; if it's still the same, you can always reinstall it.

Then perform a new FRST analysis and provide both links.

Still nothing, but I took the opportunity to delete some software that was no longer useful to me. It freed up some space!

I see that you uninstalled AVG, unfortunately it is still present on your PC, which means that if it is the cause of your problem we can't know, since it still launches many processes, this antivirus is a real octopus that infiltrates everywhere. If you want me to create an FRST script to completely remove it, just let me know.

Little news, I just changed the batteries in the mouse and the bug has disappeared...

I remain puzzled by the fact that it was a similar issue with wired mice, but it seems that was all it was. (By the way, kudos to the manufacturer for providing batteries that only last a month, with the device turned off when not in use...)

Thank you anyway for the time you spent, and I'm sorry for the inconvenience... Especially since it has still been useful for other things! I think we can close the topic.
