Soundbar connection issue / no sound via HDMI port

Solved

Hello,

I'm turning to you because I'm at an impasse. I hope your valuable insights can shed some light on my situation.

I recently acquired a JBL Bar 5.1 soundbar, which I wanted to connect to my Toshiba LED TV that is about 10-12 years old.

I watch TV, videos, or other content via a Google Chromecast. The latter is connected to one of the two HDMI ports (standard HDMI, not Arc or e-Arc). I also have a box that is not connected via HDMI because I don't use it.

The problem is that I’m not getting any sound from my soundbar, no matter which channel I use on the soundbar, HDMI 1, 2, or 3, or if I switch the Chromecast to the other HDMI port and retest all the other HDMI outputs 1, 2, or 3 on the soundbar.

The only way to get sound through the soundbar is via Bluetooth.

Is it the Chromecast that only accepts one audio output? Because I previously had an old home theater connected through a headphone jack that worked with the Chromecast.

In that case, would a connection via an optical cable (which is nonexistent on my TV) solve the problem?

Or is there a way to get sound through an HDMI connection?

Thank you in advance,

Vincent.

    Hello,

What is the exact model of this Toshiba television?

OK, this Toshiba 40L2432D TV has two audio outputs: headphone and coaxial digital output.

Your soundbar has a digital optical audio input.

The solution involves a coaxial to optical converter. Example https://www.amazon.fr/Portta-Converter-Convertisseur-Bidirectiontionnel-Entr%C3%A9es/dp/B00LPHJMII

Note: there will likely be some adjustments to be made in the audio menu of the TV to activate the coaxial digital output.

      1. Thank you for your response. I was not aware of the existence of this product.

Coaxial and digital are two different types of audio outputs? Because I have an orange "digital audio" output next to the RCA at the back of my television. If they are identical, maybe there are optical to digital cables available?

      2. Thank you for the link. I understand better.

Stupid question, but could it simply be a defect in the HDMI cable? I just want to know if I need to buy another one or not.

The notice on page 13 (14 of the PDF) mentions HDMI2 as the ARC output.

But just like the optical output, you need to enable the digital output in the sound menu, unless I'm mistaken.

However, HDMI ARC can sometimes be quite temperamental and presents certain difficulties with signals coming from external sources (other inputs), which is why I recommend using the coaxial SPDIF output in your case.

With this connection, can I leave my soundbar connected via HDMI to take advantage of HDMI CEC and control my various devices with a single remote?

          Thank you

"With this connection," what does that mean?

In any case, nothing prevents us from trying it out.

I mean, does a connection solely through optical with the optical to digital audio adapter allow for HDMI CEC?

Or as its name suggests, is it necessary to connect via HDMI in addition to the optical connection in order to benefit from HDMI CEC services?

I don't think that the optical connection alone allows for HDMI CEC service.

That's why I invited you to try it out.

          1. Optical only
          2. Optical plus HDMI

Have you removed the protections on each end of the optical cable? And selected the optical input as the input source for the bar?

Is the converter's Toslink/coaxial switch set to the correct input (Coaxial), with the coaxial cable on the in side and the optical cable on the out side?
Is it powered with a USB cable?

The output used on the television is indeed the "digital audio" output

I’m starting over... because I realize that the soundbar has 3 HDMI inputs while the manual shows only one.

        Have you tried connecting:

        • your Google Chromecast to the HDMI1 input of the soundbar
        • the box to the HDMI2 input of the soundbar
        • the television to the soundbar via an HDMI cable between the HDMI Out of the soundbar and HDMI input 1 or 2 of the TV

        1. Magnificent ???????? ! I also had to change the audio output in the Android menu to "HDMI" instead of "Auto".

The synchronization issues between the image and sound have also been resolved.

          Thank you very much ????????
