Error 02-57 Toshiba VCR RD-XV45

Solved
Hello,
I have a TOSHIBA RD-VX45 VCR that acts as a VHS player, DVD player, and has an internal HDD: https://www.tomsguide.fr/content/uploads/sites/2/cache/2007/03/toshiba-rd-vx45/990263763.jpg .

I use this player to copy VHS to DVD.

Recently, the player indicated an error during recording: "System Error" with the error code: 02-57. After displaying this error, the VCR turns off.

I searched online for the service manual for the VCR and found the source of the error (see page 43: https://elektrotanya.com/toshiba_rd-xv45ke_kb_kf_sm.pdf/download.html . The error indicates a problem with the fan being blocked for more than 30 seconds. However, the fan always runs, even when the error appears (you can feel air coming out).
The error does not appear at the same time during recording.

I have restarted the recording several times and here are the results (with a 2H VHS):
- 1st attempt: the error appears after 1H45 of recording
- 2nd attempt: the error appears after 47 minutes of recording
- 3rd attempt: the error appears after 5 minutes of recording
- 4th attempt: the error appears after 3.44 minutes of recording.

As you can see, the duration of recording decreases each time. This only happens if I do the recordings back-to-back. If the device has time to cool between attempts, I get results equivalent to 1H45.

I wonder if the problem is really with the fan or if there is a temperature sensor?
I also wonder if it could be due to power supply that has weakened.

Thank you in advance for your responses!

    1. Hello,
Personally, I’m leaning more towards an issue with the internal hard drive nearing the end of its life...

      1. Thank you for your opinion. Regarding the hard drive, it gets very hot (when I turn on the tape recorder), almost untouchable.
When I watch a recording from it, it freezes quite regularly.
It's a hard drive connected via IDE.

        Thank you for your feedback

      2. @pannevhsIsn't it the original hard drive?

      3. @MPMP10yes!

      4. @pannevhsIt would be worth trying with another hard drive...
Or also by transforming this internal hard drive into an external hard drive with a casing and then testing it with CrystalDiskInfo on a computer running Windows.

This morning, I did some research on this VCR before responding to you and it can be found, even online, that this device was marketed in 2006, so this corresponds with the wear mentioned for the drive in the first response apparently.

It is also possible to consult a repair technician for an opinion to determine the exact cause of the malfunction...

In simple playback on the DVD side...
Do you have any symptoms when watching a DVD?

      5. @MPMP10Okay, so for you the failure would come more from the HDD.
I also have another internal HDD (in SATA), so I think that with a SATA → IDE converter I could replace the HDD in the recorder and maybe even try it under Windows with your software.
And do you think there could be a "temperature sensor" or something else that could also be the cause of the problem? Would the HDD be the most likely cause according to you?

      Hello,

As you may notice, the longer it goes, the shorter the recording duration gets. This only happens if I make the recordings consecutively. If the device has time to cool down between attempts, I will achieve results equivalent to 1 hour and 45 minutes.

This is what we call a hot failure....

And yes... the hotter it gets, the more the failure appears....

I wonder if the problem really comes from the fan or is there a temperature sensor?

      Fan: Probably
      Temperature sensor: Very likely

The error indicates a problem with the fan that would be blocked for more than 30 seconds. However, the fan is still running, even when the error appears (you can feel air coming out).

The fact that you can feel the air "coming out" does not mean that the fan is working (or working properly)... warm air being lighter than cold air will necessarily escape wherever it can...

If your product is no longer under warranty...

Once completely unplugged from the power supply, you could use compressed air inside the device. (making sure to pass through each fan).
Dust may be preventing the fan(s) from working fully or partially...

If that doesn’t solve your problem, you may eventually need to consider contacting customer service..

      1. Thank you, when I spoke about the fan, that’s what I see, but regarding the temperature sensor, I don’t know if there is one; it’s just a guess because the more it heats up, the faster the error appears.
I have already dusted off the drive.
And no, the product is no longer under warranty.
NOTE: I only see one fan.
        Thank you for your reply.

    3. Hello,

I'm coming back here because my problem is not resolved.

MPMP10 suggested to me that the Hard Drive might be at the end of its life.

I would have liked it to be the case, but even if that is true, the malfunction is still present:

To see if the HDD was the cause of the problem, I disconnected the internal HDD from the recorder and restarted the recorder. (There is no HDD connected anymore.)

The VCR/HDD/DVD can operate without the HDD.

I then started recording again, but the error persists!

FOR REFERENCE: The error code signifies a fan blockage (see: p.43 https://elektrotanya.com/toshiba_rd-xv45ke_kb_kf_sm.pdf/download.html).

      Thanks for your response.

      Best regards.

      1. Should I try to change the fan?
