Location of "Startup Files" with Word 2019.

Hello everyone,
Changing equipment, I switched from Word 2010 to Word 2019 and I'm struggling to get it to recognize that my Normal template should be taken into account globally.
I understand that I need to define it via >File >Options >Advanced >General (a little below the middle in the list) >File Locations >Startup Files
Problem: I cannot read the name of the folder that appears where I should install my Normal.dotm. I only see C:\...\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
Of course, I've searched on C: for "STARTUP," as well as "Startup," but to no avail.
If anyone can help me locate this directory, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hello,

    The normal.dotm should not be in the Startup folder. We put in that folder everything we want to be loaded at startup (like additional macros). As for the normal.dotm, if it doesn't exist in its specified location, Word will create a new one, and that's not what you want.

    The normal.dotm should be located here:
    C:\Users\[User]\Documents\Custom Office Templates

      I’ve copied my Normal.dotm (158k) into C:\Users\[MyName]\Documents\Custom Office Templates, but when I open a document, my styles are not directly accessible.

      Oops... Sorry Telliak, I didn't even notice you were the author of this post!
      So, first of all, thank you for your wishes and a very happy 2019 to you too.

      The article you’re talking about, which was written ages ago, is not really accurate, or at least not very clear (it wasn't me who wrote it!!!!! :)))... When I have a moment, I'll rewrite it more clearly.

      In reality, the styles applied to a document can only come from one template at a time, even though we can also retrieve styles from another template, but in that case, we're only adding them to the current document or template. And since Normal.dotm is mandatory, the styles default to coming from Normal.dotm.

      So, putting a template in Startup solely for styles is not justified. Moreover, we also mentioned auto-insertions, but it’s no longer the case with the new versions. So for the new versions, the interest of Startup is only justified for macros. I really need to rewrite that article!!

      So, your normal.dotm is in principle in the right place (C:\Users\[MyName]\Documents\Custom Office Templates). Just check that the folder is correctly specified under the File Locations section, User templates, because since you've changed versions, the settings may have remained as they were (...\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates).

      Regarding macros, you can leave them in normal.dotm if there are few. Now, if they are important, if they are significant developments, it is indeed better to put them in Startup. You can even add buttons to access them on the Quick Access Toolbar or the ribbon.

      I’d like to revisit styles. Styles are no longer, as they used to be, dependent on the document template since we can have independent style sets. This is very handy for changing the look of an already created document with one click, without altering the layout, thanks to style sets. And you just need to hover over the set to see what it will look like.

      Of course, you can also, as before, attach another template to an existing document, but it’s slower and you don’t see the result immediately.

      Well, I managed to get by.
      The philosophy of Word has indeed somewhat changed and I have to adapt to it to feel really good.
      Fortunately, I found a book on XinXii — written by two girls, it seems to me :-) — that will really help me...
