Hello, I bought an HP laptop running Windows 10 and a SAMSUNG SE-208 DVD writer. However, I am unable to read DVDs even though the drive appears in Windows Explorer (when there is no DVD, but disappears when I insert a DVD), Windows indicates that the device is working properly, and the driver is up to date. I tested the DVD drive on another HP desktop PC and it works fine. I’ve searched online, but I haven't found a driver that allows it to work on this PC. Thank you for your help.

Press Windows + R
Type --> devmgmt.msc and OK.

Go to CD/DVD drives
Right-click on the CD/DVD drive
Uninstall

Click on --> Action
Scan for hardware changes.

Hello

Thank you for your help but I had already done this manipulation.

I have uninstalled the driver several times and tried another driver (file cdrom.sys in system32/drivers) but it doesn’t work (I specifically copied the files cdrom.sys and cdrom.inf from the fixed PC where the drive works but it doesn't work. Maybe there are other files to copy?).

When I reconnect the USB cable, Windows reinstalls the same driver that doesn’t work, stating that the CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.
If I try to update the driver, Windows tells me that the driver version is up to date.
However, the install previous version button is grayed out.

As soon as I put a DVD in, the DVD drive disappears from Windows Explorer. You can hear the drive working but nothing happens.

Hello,

Maybe remove the Upper and Lower filters?
Download this -->> Delete Filters.inf <<--
and put it on the desktop.

Right-click on the file
Choose --> Install
Restart the PC.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work because the lower filter and upper filter keys do not exist in the registry for the CD-ROM device class (4D36E965).
I don't know if it's related to Windows 10.

In the device manager, I have:
Generic USB Hub
Root USB Hub (xHCI)
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller – 1.0 (Microsoft)
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Mass Storage Device
Composite USB Device

For all these devices, it indicates that they are working properly.

For your information, I plugged a USB key into the USB port of the DVD, and it works perfectly.

Hello

After quite a bit of research, I have come to the conclusion that the difference between the desktop PC where the drive works and the laptop where it doesn’t is the software version of the driver.

On the desktop PC, the version is 10.0.15063.0 (WinBuild 160101.0800) which works.
On the laptop, the version is 10.0.10240.16384 which does not work.
Both versions are from 06/21/2006.

I can’t find version 10.0.15063.0 that works on the Samsung site or on the Internet.

So, I tried some manipulations by copying the cdrom.sys and .inf files from the desktop to the laptop, but I don’t know all the files of the driver so I’m a bit stuck (I think I haven’t copied all the useful files because there is an error).

I will keep looking.
I also asked Samsung to send me the driver 10.0.15063.0. I’m waiting for a response.

Hello,

Actually, I backed up the driver from the desktop PC using the driver backup tool, and it appears that only the files cdrom.inf, cdrom.sys (and cdrom.PNF?) are necessary.

So, after copying the files into the appropriate directories, I updated the driver using the commands to Search for a driver on my computer, choose from a list of drivers (the 15063 driver shows up).
When I select it, error 39 occurs (driver is corrupted or missing).
If I choose the provided driver option, I select cdrom.inf but get the same error.

If you see where the manipulation error is, thank you for your help.

Run a sfc:
Press Windows Key + X
Select --> Windows PowerShell (admin)
Type --> sfc /scannow and hit enter

A system file check will be performed.

Hello

I performed the procedure on the USB hubs but with no results.

I am still convinced that the problem comes from the version of the driver.

Despite my multiple attempts, I cannot install the driver that I copied from the desktop PC where the reader works.
I always get an error 039 which indicates that the driver is missing or damaged.
This is probably because I did not copy all the files of the driver. I copied from the desktop PC the files cdrom.sys, cdrom.inf, cdrom.PNF, cdfs.sys, IologMsg.dll, c_firmware.inf, c_firmware.PNF.

Or, I may not be updating correctly via the driver update commands.
