Hello,
When I'm working in Audacity, the sound stops coming through my headphones and comes out of the computer's speakers, which is quite annoying when working at night.... However, when I click on the 'sound' icon next to the clock, the headset still appears to be active... Is this a bug or have I missed a setting?
Note: when I minimize Audacity in the taskbar (without closing it) and open an audio file (for example, the one I extracted), the sound comes through the headset normally... As soon as I go back to Audacity, it switches again to the computer's speakers.

Hello, this is probably because in the Audacity software, the audio settings are not selected to go through the headphones but through the speakers of your computer.
In Audacity: click on the "Edit" tab then "Preferences" and select devices.
The settings are:
In "Host" > MME
Playback Device > select Headphones
Recording Device: Headphones (mine says no device found so apparently that's normal :)
There you go, hoping I helped you :)

Hello Feeling974!
I have the same problem but I'm on a Mac.
The dropdown menus are not the same.
What would the procedure be, please?
Hello everyone,
I have the same problem with headphone output using Audacity on the MacBook Air M1: the sound only comes out of the Mac itself even when the headphones are plugged in with a mini-jack, while all other sounds (YouTube, etc.) come out through the headphones...
The only solution I've found that might help:
plug in the headphones before opening the Audacity software - go to Transport -> Rescan Audio Devices,
Then, in the top bar of Audacity: click on the little arrow of Audio Setup -> Playback Device -> select "External Headphones" which should normally have appeared: Miracle, it works.
But be careful, if you unplug and replug the headphones while Audacity is open... the external headphones are no longer recognized! You have to close everything and replug the headphones before opening Audacity again.
This is the only solution I have found for now, which I find rather inconvenient! So if you have found another one, feel free to share,
Thank you all and hang in there
