What should I do if someone wants to communicate with me on Facebook?

Hello,
I sent a friend request to someone on Facebook who accepted it. Today, I received the following notification: "(Name of the person) wants to be able to communicate with you on Facebook." However, I don't understand what I can do about it, how to grant the request, and why they didn't just send me a message directly!
I tried clicking on the notification to see what was happening, but nothing happened.
What should I do and how should I respond to this?

This person just sent you an invitation to join them (it's the "invite friends" option on Messenger) ;)
But it's not a request to accept if you have this person as a friend, it's just that they want you to send them a message
