GA-G41M-combo Motherboard (rev 2.0) issue with DDR3 RAM.

Solved

Hello, I bought a new motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-G41M-combo (rev 2.0), and along with it, I purchased two Corsair DDR3 RAM sticks at 1333 MHz, each 4GB.
After installing the motherboard, which went very well with no issues, I tried to start the computer with the RAM sticks mentioned earlier, but the computer wouldn’t boot. It started, I could hear the HDD spinning up, but after a few seconds, the computer restarted and then shut down. Additionally, there was no display on my screen.

The solution I found was to use some old DDR2 RAM sticks that I had, and everything worked fine.

According to the seller of the motherboard, I need to update the BIOS to allow the use of these RAM sticks.

I checked on the Gigabyte website, and the motherboard supports DDR3 up to 8GB.

So here are my questions: do you think that updating the BIOS could fix the problem? Have you ever encountered this kind of issue, and are there any other solutions you could suggest?

Thank you.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 24.0.1312.57 / SOCKET 775 INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 / AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series / Motherboard GA-G41M-combo (rev 2.0)

So here it is, I'm updating. I did the update, it didn't change anything, and before trying to overclock, I went to my dealer, and I told him I wanted him to find a solution fairly quickly. He changed the RAM sticks (some Crucial DDR3 still at 4GB and 1333MHz) and poof, it works! So I think either I ended up with a bad defective series or the Corsair ones are not compatible with my motherboard (I doubt that).

But after a week of persistence, the problem is resolved!!!!

Hi

Yes, updating the BIOS might fix this issue because the motherboard handles 1.5V 1333 MHz 8GB Max well

And I also saw that version FB adjusts the DDR according to the voltage function, so probably without this version the motherboard is unable to run the modules at 1.5V since DDR2 only works at 1.8V, that's a hypothesis

But you don't mix DDR2 and DDR3 together on the motherboard?

Do you know how to flash it?

But on this motherboard, a DDR3 module must be a maximum of 2 GB; otherwise, for a 4 GB module, you need to use DDR2.

I have the same problem... this information is nowhere to be found, what was your solution?

I am in discussion with Gigabyte, asking them to refund my RAM, as my dealer does not want to take them back.

This motherboard is very difficult regarding RAM; its problem does not come from the amount of memory or its frequency, but rather from the number of cycles they must perform to reach this frequency (e.g., CL7 or CAS7 or CH7).
The only DDR3 RAM I could put in are RAMs with a cycle of x7; those with a higher cycle (e.g., CL9) are immediately rejected by the motherboard, regardless of the brand of those RAMs.

To contradict what was said above, you can put a max of 8GB in DDR3 and not just 4GB, but they will be limited to 1066MHz; the maximum frequency of 1333MHz can only be achieved through overclocking, but nothing prevents you from putting in sticks rated at 1600MHz; they will just be limited to the maximum speed of the motherboard.

I have exactly the same problem trying to switch from 2*1Go DDR2 to 2*4Go DDR3 1333MHz CORSAIR CMV8GX3M2A1333C9...

I updated the BIOS to version 2014.
The 3 beeps disappear, the PC pretends to boot by starting the fans, then stops and loops through this process.
So the BIOS update made some changes, but it's not enough.
I just sent a complaint to MSI.

it's the G41 chipset that's the problem. I have one, we need to find compatible RAM sticks. If you want 2 x 4GB in DDR3, it's quite rare and complicated to get it to work. If you want more information, there's a video that explains everything: https://youtu.be/7Y9i8gZxNvg

Hello,

I have the same issue as you, the Corsair RAM sticks that were recommended to me don't work: CMX4GX3M1A1333C9.

@Met67000: could you provide a link or the reference for your Crucial sticks please? Are you on rev 2.0 and BIOS FB?

However, I would like to correct something. The maximum memory frequency is not 1066MHz. In the BIOS, it's easily possible to set the frequency to 1333MHz.

Under the sections >> Mb Intelligent Tweak (MIT)
>> MCH frequency

Change the FSB from "333MHz" to "Auto".

Then in "System Multiplier" you will see 3 new settings, which are:

2.40b >> 800
3.20b >> 1066
-
4.00c >>>1333
3.00a >> 1000
4.00a >> 1333

There are actually 2 types of 1333, I have no idea what that corresponds to. I thought either one would work with my sticks, but no.

Thanks for providing the reference for your sticks, that would be nice.

Hello
I have the same problem but with DDR3 at 1066 MHz that should have worked. In doing some research, I realize there's one parameter that no one talks about, which is the processor frequency. I believe, though I'm not certain, that it's not possible to have a processor with a frequency lower than that of the memory sticks. In my case, it's an E4500 at 800 MHz, so I assume my memory sticks must also have a maximum frequency of 800, or if there's a method to desynchronize the two, I don't know it and I don't want to overclock.

Hello, have you solved your problem?

Otherwise, in the BIOS you have the option to set your RAM frequency to 800MHz.
If I'm not mistaken, you go to
>>Mb Intelligent Tweak (MIT)
>> MCH frequency

... and there you set the System Multiplier parameter to 2.40b.

Hi,
Yes, I understand the manipulation you're suggesting, except that once the RAM sticks are installed, we can't even access the BIOS. Since then, I've done some research and I'm pretty sure about what I was saying in my previous post. So I might consider changing the processor because they're not very expensive today. Finally, this motherboard is a bit of a scam! Because in reality, either we can't find the RAM that works in 2x4GB, or we can find it but it's overpriced.

I have a G41M-Combo rev 2.0, I just installed Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000 MHz (PC3 16000) (CMX8GX3M2A2000C9).

You need to start with one stick and then manually modify the DRAM Timing. I set them to the values indicated on the sticks: 9-10-9-27.

I was then able to boot with both sticks and the 8 GB are recognized by the BIOS.

I haven't switched to the 64-bit version yet (that will happen soon...), so I can't judge the stability of the setup.

I just switched to Windows 64-bit. Everything works fine and I have 8 GB available.
