Playing MKV files with subtitles on Philips TV

I know that 2 years later, this won't be useful for you, but for those facing the issue...

To read subtitles via the USB input on a Philips TV, you need to extract the srt from the mkv using mkvextract (it's in mkvtoolkit or you can find mkvmerge, using mkv...GUI.exe)
then edit it with notepad and save it with ANSI encoding (otherwise, accented characters won't be decoded), and give it the same name as the mkv: both mkv and srt files must be present in the same folder on the USB drive connected to the TV via USB.
On the Philips TV, start playback and go to options, subtitles, and the window to activate them will appear...

Note: by default in Windows, extensions are hidden and it can sometimes be difficult to rename them correctly; to show them: open a window in the explorer (documents, for example) menu tools ('alt' if the menu is hidden) then folder options and view, uncheck: hide extensions for known file types.

You just need to extract the subtitle from the mkv container (using mkvextract for example) in srt format and rename it to the same name as the mkv (e.g., Film.mkv and Film.srt).

So I have one that will serve you even more!
Buy a Raspberry Pi (30€ on Amazon for example), a small case to make it look nice for 4€, a Class 10 8GB SD card

With that, you only need a USB-microUSB cable (like a mobile phone charger), an internet cable from the BOX, and an HDMI cable.

We prepare the SD card with Raspbmc on Windows, Mac... (one click and it's done)
then we connect everything: put the Raspberry in its case, then,
* the SD plugged into the Raspberry
* the HDMI from the Raspberry to the TV, and last:
* the USB from the TV to the board, as a power supply => Boom, it wakes up

We switch to the source: HDMI from the Raspberry of course and miracle, a lot of Linux stuff that looks scary. We pretend nothing's happening and go watch elsewhere for half an hour while the actual installation takes place

When we come back, surprise, we have XBMC on our TV! And the best part is that your TV remote ... works on it, without any setup! Magic
Of course, we still have to configure XBMC a bit, like setting it to French, just like we configure any program

And say goodbye to format troubles, subtitle issues, and all the hassle, with the added bonus of a huge media library with all the movie info that comes automatically
(look for XBMC online, try it on Windows, Mac, Linux to see what it looks like... so you can then use it independently with the Raspberry)
There are also add-ons (YouTube, browser, etc.) that will turn your TV into a smart TV that would make all the smart TVs in the world pale.

We just need to plug a USB drive into the USB port of the Raspberry and we're off
It's gonna be something else compared to the TV's input!!! (which only serves as a power supply here, we can also power the Raspberry with a phone charger)

And possibly:
IF we have our computer turned on, we can access it without issue, it's already preconfigured, so we can watch videos on it, or disks connected to it, in fact, we have a small computer for 30€ that can do everything
(we can also make a Linux computer with Raspbian by the way, just need a keyboard and a mouse)

Want to speed things up, find it a bit slow?
* Install on a USB stick: we buy the fastest 8GB one possible, and prepare an SD card by checking 'USB' during its initialization. This SD can be as small as 64MB (it exists, but oh well) and be slow, we don't care in this case it will only serve to pass the baton to the stick: the cheapest one possible will do
* We overclock to 900 with the case at 950 without the case (this is accepted by the warranty and preconfigured in Raspbmc, it's just an option)

Simple video output from my PC to the TV: An HDMI cable.
It's the simplest, you use a video stream that you create yourself to see your VLC.. If your TV has an HDMI 1.4 port, you could connect your TV to Ethernet and video at the same time!
I don't know how to help you get subtitles from the stream, sorry.

Dominique, if you put an MKV on your flash drive, it should play it directly from the USB port of your TV! I don't know if your Philips Blu-ray player is supported.

Yes, the remote control has a subtitle function but only for those from TV channels, when available. The TV does not manage the different subtitle tracks from files on the USB. That's why you have to mux them, which means directly embedding them into the video. But in my case, even embedding, the subtitles do not appear on 1080p :/

Currently, I have my PC connected via ethernet to my BOX decoder and I'm streaming with VLC on the channel of a TV station.

The problem is that for some MKV files, I can change the audio language but can't access the subtitles, and for others, there's neither audio language nor subtitles available.
