I have a complementary solution because with VLC you can only view the file on your computer, it doesn't create a new video.
To be able to save your future subtitled video on your external disk and watch it wherever you want, you can use any video converter (Super, Mediacoder...), or better AVI ReComp (it only works with .avi files, but that's the majority of videos on the net). You just need to load the subtitles and start the conversion (the operations are intuitive, or you can watch a tutorial). It takes a little time, but I find it's worth it. The converter creates a new video that will have the subtitles integrated. And that's it!

You don’t need any special software for that. Any video player such as VLC can do it without any problem. You just need to choose the subtitle language in the menus.

There’s no need to look for movies with subtitles. You can find most subtitles available for free download on opensubtitles.org for example (make sure that the subtitles match your video exactly).
Unzip them in the same folder as your video so your video player can recognize them. If necessary, manually open the file (in VLC: Video>Subtitles>Open Subtitle File) or rename it to exactly match the name of the video file.
