Hello everyone.
I just bought the latest trendy game, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which of course was released today, but it turns out I have a launch issue with the game. Everything installs correctly, but when I try to start the game, an error message appears in English along with a black screen. It seems that a file might be missing, but I'm not sure.
I don't think this is due to my desktop PC since I tried it on my laptop, which is brand new with very good specifications to run the game, but I encountered the same issue there as well.
Are there any patches or anything to download?
Thank you in advance. Best regards, Guitou

Hello everyone,
this is my first message on this site but I hope to be helpful!
I had the same problem (I think):
Neither multiplayer nor solo would launch and an error message appeared at startup:
Fatal error
Steam must be running to play this game
I went to the Steam forums where several solutions were proposed by players having the same problem:
-Install Steam from the website
-Modify some Steam files, etc.
-Run Steam as an administrator
-Disable User Account Control
but nothing worked for me. So I tried a few things and the only thing that resolved my issue was installing Steam on the system partition of my hard drive! In other words, installing Steam on the partition where Windows is installed. If anyone sees the reason why this solved my problem, I’m all ears!
Hoping to have provided a bit of help

Good evening everyone, I've also bought Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and when I start the game, and launch the campaign mode, the game closes by itself after 5-10 minutes. I've checked if my drivers are up to date, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game... and the problem persists... I have the required specifications (even well above). What do you recommend?
Thank you in advance. -

Well, ValD, your problem has been known for quite some time... as for me, I think it's Steam's fault that this kind of crash happens... but who knows why!!!
The only thing I found to make the campaign mode work is to not go through Steam, the advantage is that you can play CoD even without internet, the downside is that you need a crack for that...
Since I don't play online, I don't know the consequences of the crack on network gaming, but at least it has the advantage of getting the game to work...
PS: if I leave my email, it's so that people who need help starting the game can contact me, not for those who need to download the game to reach out to me... it's up to you to acquire the game as you wish, it's not my problem and there's no need to come ask me for help with that!! -

No but Thomas, excuse me for saying it a bit bluntly, but you’re a sucker...
If you think the guy who had the game before you no longer uses his key then you’re such a nice little teddy bear... the guy installed his game, made images of the CDs, signed up online and then sold his game to get some of his money back!!
Personally, I have nothing against you guys who pay for your games, I think it's honorable, but here's the thing, I can't afford it. I can't buy a game and get ripped off just to stay decent. Recently, game creators have been finding more and more tricks to "fight piracy," in the end, all they do is... For Cod MW2 they called on Steam... it's the worst, by the way, just go on Google and see the number of people who paid and can no longer play CoD because Steam doesn’t work anymore...
I have the same problem as them, but I don’t complain, I don’t have to since I haven’t paid... and yes, after getting ripped off so many times, I’ve crossed over to the dark side lol !!
What you should have done, I think, is go back to the store and ask them to refund you for the game because after all, when you buy something, the least you expect from it is to be able to use it...
Happy New Year Thomas =)-
Hello, I have a problem with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I heard that you could help me, so would you be so kind as to assist me, please? I'm stuck at installation, and since I can't afford to buy it, I can't find a solution because the key has to match the Steam account... help me.
- Listen, this kind of forum is not meant for that, I even think it's forbidden... everyone has to buy the games... lol
I'll leave you my email address Address removed CCM Moderation, you write to me and then I’ll reply explaining how to do it...
Otherwise, creating a Steam account is completely free... using Steam, however, is a real pain... =(

I have a big problem, but I don't know if it's from the game. So here it is: I installed the game and it works, I play for about 5 minutes and my screen turns yellow with black dots, and then I can't play anymore unless I restart the computer. I play again for 5 minutes and it happens again. Please help me, I don't know if I should buy the game again or do something to stop my screen from turning yellow.

I contacted Activision to unlock the key for my second-hand COD Modern Warfare 2 game purchased from a cash exchange. I suggest you read the email exchange I had with them:
Hello,
I just bought the game at a Cash Express on Bolivar Street in Paris.
The CD key has apparently been used by the previous user who registered it online.
So my key is not recognized.
I saw on the forum "How it works" that by calling you it was possible to unlock the key (which probably no longer serves anyone)
Thank you in advance for your reply. The CD key is: XXXX - XXXX - XXXX - XXXX - XXXX
Attached are the two receipts as proof of purchase...
Thomas
Hello,
Regarding your problem, we invite you to contact your retailer as we do not provide support for second-hand products.
Thank you for your understanding.
The technical support team wishes you a happy new year 2010.
Best regards,
The Technical Service.
Thank you for your reply,
That said, my retailer won't help me either... so it’s a dead end. To play this game, you have to buy it new, which is a first... This clearly encourages piracy. I paid 39E for a game I can't play because someone registered online with the serial number, and that person is no longer using the game...
It would be enough to remove the contact in question from your platform: that way I could register and play... 2010 will be a happy year if I can play COD!
Thank you in advance for your kindness!
Thomas
Hello,
In the future, more and more games will use this system. The store should have warned you and not taken back the second-hand game.
The technical support team wishes you a happy new year 2010.
Best regards,
The Technical Service.
I will therefore manage to handle things differently... lol... Thank you for your valuable help!
Long live customer relations! Long live Activision...!
Thomas
Hello,
Your comments have been forwarded to the relevant department.
The technical support team wishes you a happy new year 2010.
Best regards,
The Technical Service.
Thank you,
I, for my part, will take care to publish our conversation everywhere users who are frustrated or future second-hand game buyers might ask the same question as me.... the web 2.0, you know...
Happy holidays!

It's simply that your graphics card isn't powerful enough, so you can't play. To be able to play, you need to change it; you definitely need a graphics card to be able to play well.

Well, I suggest you install it on your laptop. Can you tell me what it says when you launch the game???
-
Ok, but you know it's not just you who has this problem. I met two people who have the same issue as you.
-
For my part, I managed to fix the problem after struggling quite a bit; in the end, I got fed up and uninstalled and reinstalled it, and it worked. I was afraid that my data would be erased, but they keep all our multiplayer data (titles, classes, emblems, etc.) on their servers; however, for solo, you need to save from our folders, and I don't know which one exactly.
Thanks, Tomduff, for showing us how polite they are at Activision, always so courteous, LOL. This will prevent some people from getting caught out, even though it's quite unacceptable. -

Yeah well I'm not very sure but I think you should download a driver and to do that you first need to go on Google, then you download the latest drivers with the name of your graphics card. Try it, you'll see if it works or not, I'm not sure but it's worth a shot.

Hello,
I also have a problem. I installed the game correctly, but when I try to launch it, it says
"Could not load localization.txt.
Please make sure Modern Warfare 2 is run from the correct folder."
Basically, it's telling me that the game is not being launched from the right folder and I need to find the correct one, but I have no idea what to do.
Does anyone know how to fix this, please?

ok it's good, I found a solution on another forum, (see, it didn't take long)
check if your file is there: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2
if it's not there, create it (it's a notepad file) with this inside:
french
WIN_CONFIGURE_UPDATED_TITLE
"Recommended settings updated"
WIN_CONFIGURE_UPDATED_BODY
"The recommended settings have been updated since your
last game of Modern Warfare 2.
Would you like the game to configure itself optimally based on these new settings?
This is recommended for most players. Only the settings will be changed, your controls will remain as they are."
WIN_LOW_MEMORY_BODY
"Your virtual memory seems low.
This can cause the game to slow down or even crash completely.
It is highly recommended to close a few applications before launching Modern Warfare 2.
Would you like to launch Modern Warfare 2 anyway?"
WIN_LOW_MEMORY_TITLE
"Low Memory"
WIN_COLORDEPTH_WARN_BODY
"It is very unlikely that a correct window display can be initialized with the current colors. Select 'OK' to try anyway. Click 'Cancel' if you wish to exit."
WIN_COLORDEPTH_WARN_TITLE
"Low Color Quality"
WIN_COMPUTER_CHANGE_BODY
"Your computer seems to have been modified since your last game of Modern Warfare 2. Would you like the game to configure itself optimally based on your new hardware?
This is recommended for most players.
Only the settings will be changed, your controls will remain as they are."
WIN_COMPUTER_CHANGE_TITLE
"Use optimal configuration?"
WIN_DISK_FULL_BODY
"File writing failed. The hard drive may be full."
WIN_DISK_FULL_TITLE
"Error writing file"
WIN_IMPROPER_QUIT_BODY
"Modern Warfare 2 does not appear to have been exited properly.
Would you like to start the game in Safe Mode (recommended)?
This will affect your system settings, but not your controls."
WIN_IMPROPER_QUIT_TITLE
"Start in Safe Mode?"
WIN_ERROR
"Fatal error."
WIN_NO_STEAM
"Steam must be enabled to play this game."
WIN_OUT_OF_MEM_BODY
"Error - Insufficient memory. You probably have almost no free space left on your hard drive."
WIN_OUT_OF_MEM_TITLE
"Error - Insufficient memory."
WIN_UNABLE_LOAD_DLL_BODY
"Failed to load a DLL file. This issue is likely due to low memory, insufficient free space on the hard drive, or missing DLL files."
WIN_DIRECTX_INIT_TITLE
"DirectX Error"
WIN_DIRECTX_INIT_BODY
"Recoverable DirectX error.
Consult the ReadMe file for possible solutions."
WIN_MSS_INIT_FAILED
"Failed to initialize Miles Sound System.
Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and DirectX."
*****Copy and paste this into the file and name it localization.txt***** -
I have the same issue as Nico, he says he wasn't properly closed when that's not true, I did click Quit and it worked fine yesterday. So I'm really wondering what to do, if anyone has any idea...

Hello, Guitou. I’m going to tell you I don’t know, but it shows me that the disc is unreadable because the disc in the game has 3 small scratches, and I'm looking to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I had this little problem and tonight I had the re.ve.la.tion!!!
I simply disconnected all the firewalls and other spyw. doc... and ohh miracle, it's working again!!!
So to everyone, don't do anything else, it doesn't help (I tried a lot of things before, like changing lines in the game menu, uninstalling, reinstalling, everything!!), but in this case, we needed to think of that!! -
Sorry
Steam is required to play MW2 online.
And for your issues:
Steam>Library>Left-click on MW2>Properties>Local Files>Verify the integrity of game cache.
Let me know if this works, thanks
